Medical Dosimetrist - Cancer Center (Days)

The medical dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team who has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology in the management of cancer or other disease processes, with special expertise in radiation therapy treatment planning. Medical dosimetrists develop, optimize, and monitor patient treatment plans and provide oversight to high level treatment procedures. Accurate calculations are required for all treatment plan implementation. The medical dosimetrist must have a) knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance in the management of cancer and other radio-responsive conditions, b) provide input for the use of ancillary treatment devices and patient immobilization techniques. The medical dosimetrist must accurately transfer and document treatment parameters either manually or electronically. Written and oral communication skills are required.

Required Knowledge & Skills

Education: Associate Degree or 2 years of college coursework

Experience: Two years of related experience. Requires working knowledge of specialized practices, equipment, and procedures.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CERTIFIED MEDICAL DOSIMETRIST

Qualifications

  • Required: Varian ARIA and Eclipse experience.
  • Preferred: SBRT planning experience.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety procedures, standards, and protocols.
  • Participate in department quality assurance programs and quality control standards.
  • Ability to identify problems and communicate solutions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, physicians, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, in writing and by computer.

Functions

Area of Responsibilities

  • Prepares and checks treatment plans based on dosage prescribed by physician. Consults with physician on patient treatment.
  • Obtains patient data necessary to design computerized treatment plans including 3D, IMRT, VMAT, Electrons, SBRT, and assists with HDR Brachytherapy planning.
  • Calculates radiation dosage for individual patient treatments.
  • Completes and or assists in planning and building beam modifying devices.
  • Provides technical assistance to the Radiation Physicist.
  • Collaborates with the Radiation Therapists when needed for patient positioning and or treatment setup.
  • Keeps current on new treatment planning techniques, devices and methods.
  • Participates in continuing education activities to comply with MDCB requirements.
  • Works collaboratively with medical, technical and administrative staff to ensure the delivery of quality services and to ensure that all applicable regulatory, safety and legal requirements are met.
  • Complies with HIPAA regulations as they apply to job. Protects patient confidentiality.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as needed.
  • Complies with Tanner Health System's policies and procedures to ensure the best quality care for patient and promote safety.
  • Promotes a positive, professional, working relationship with patients, physicians, peers and staff.

Compliance Statement
