The Phlebotomy Processing Supervisor is responsible for the operation of the laboratory area involving phlebotomy and specimen processing to include staff, quality, supplies and fiscal responsibilities. Interacts with other areas of the lab and facility to ensure efficient and effective functioning.

Education
High School Diploma or GED

Experience
One year of related experience. Requires a working knowledge of standard practices and procedures.

Licenses & Certifications
  • Certified Phlebotomist

Qualifications
  • Minimum of National Phlebotomy Certification, Certified Medical Assistant, MLT or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in a professional manner.
  • Must be able to provide leadership in a team environment.
  • Must demonstrate computer proficiency.
  • One year experience in a clinical laboratory/reference lab/physician office lab setting required.
  • Phlebotomy skills proficiency required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
Requirements:
Area of Responsibilities
  • Assists the phlebotomy team in collecting specimens in a timely manner.
  • Communicates with co-workers and phlebotomy team in an effective manner with respect.
  • Manages the phlebotomy workload by utilizing the handheld devices. Ensures that the work is done timely.
  • Organizes, directs and supervises phlebotomy daily duties and functions.
  • Supervises phlebotomy team and ensures appropriate shift coverage. Makes phone calls when short staffed to team members not at work for availability.
  • Accountability is shown for retrieving specimens from the pneumatic tube system.
  • Assists in setting up microbiology cultures when needed.
  • Assists in training new phlebotomist(s) and students during orientation period to reflect Tanner Health System policies and procedures.
  • Complies with standards set forth by all regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrates discretion and tact to perform duties in a professional manner and demonstrates patient confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in specimen collection and specimen processing using two patient identifiers.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work safely and responsibly without supervision.
  • Ensures competency of phlebotomy staff including areas outside of the laboratory that draw specimens
  • Knowledgeable of and follows OSHA?s blood borne pathogen regulations and Infection Prevention guidelines, ie. appropriate handwashing techniques, patient isolation techniques, etc.
  • Participates in continuing education as mandated per accreditation agencies and hospital policy.
  • Performs drug screen training for the phlebotomy staff.
  • Performs phlebotomy evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Provides secretarial/clerical assistance when needed.
  • Responsible for computer functions that are related to the processing area and phlebotomy area.
  • Responsible for the ordering of phlebotomy supplies.

Compliance Statement
Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.

Education

Supervision
  • Supervises phlebotomy team and specimen processors. Supervises a section of employees; orients and trains employees; schedules, assigns, checks, and maintains flow of work; appraise performance and discusses with employees; recommends hiring, disciplining, and changes in status of employees; carries out most personnel decisions and initiates minor personnel actions. Trains new phlebotomist?s during orientation period. Coordinates phlebotomy intern?s clinical rotation.

Supervisory Responsibility
Has limited supervision over a large section of employees (15 up), i.e. assigns and directs their work; instructs new employees and corrects results, may discuss with supervisor, but has no authority over job content or personnel. Team governance where the Members evaluate, interview, and recommend personnel actions.

Assignment requires planning and arranging own work to reach definite objectives. Applies knowledge of a specific field using several varied procedures or techniques. Solves non-routine technical, treatment, or operational problems under general guides

Physical Effort
Medium physical effort - Lifts, carries, or handles lightweight (1 to 25 lbs.) materials or equipment for most of the day. Occasional physical effort with medium weight objects (25-60 lbs.). Very occasional physical effort with heavy objects (over 60 lbs.).Works in reaching or strained positions for about half of day.

Working Conditions
Considerable - (About 75% of the day) Involved in exposure to dirt, odors, noise, or some work is performed with exposure to temperature/weather extremes/occupational risk and probability of coming into contact with blood borne pathogens, other potentially infectious diseases, or biomedical/bio-hazardous materials.
