The Taos News is looking for an ambitious editor to lead the best weekly news organization in New Mexico. The successful candidate must be a talented journalist and team-first leader who embraces working and living in our iconic community deep in Northern New Mexico.
Our next editor will develop, implement and lead an award-winning newsroom that focuses on Taos, Taos Pueblo and the regional communities of Northern New Mexico. The editor oversees an audience-focused team in planning, assigning, designing, editing and managing editorial content delivered through the newspaper, digital channels and magazines published by the Taos News.
This is a dream job for an accomplished journalist who wants to work for a locally owned and independent news organization with a longstanding reputation for community engagement and quality journalism. The editor engages actively with the community and supports the Taos News’ leadership team on events aligned with the company’s journalistic brand.
The ideal candidate will oversee eight employees in our newsroom and a magazine editor. The Taos News publishes 25 magazine titles annually, making it the largest magazine publisher in New Mexico.
The role comes with high expectations. We’re seeking someone with five years of success as a journalist. Our editor needs to be competitive, urgent, and innovative. Spanish language skills preferred.
The successful candidate must have:
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills;
- Excellent language and visual skills;
- Highly specialized interest in our community and curiosity/understanding of Northern New Mexico, including its political and cultural history and its social, demographic, economic, political and artistic trends. Desire to be a fierce government watchdog.
- Proven experience and skills in multimedia, digital, and social media, including leading a multimedia news team;
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities and motivate others, with a solid track record that shows an ability to manage complex projects;
- Strong level of integrity, empathy and ethics in helping team members grow professionally;
- Sense of humility (because no one is perfect);
- Active listening skills;
- Strong respect for deadlines and solutions;
- Collaborative mindset in working with the publisher and across departmental and product lines.
- Strong understanding of the Taos News’ role and legacy in the community and the editor’s responsibilities as the News’ ambassador.
