Mountain Bike Patrollers are responsible for the risk management, on-hill medical emergency services, signage, accident investigations, and overall mountain bike trail system safety.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide strong leadership through clear and quick decision making in all daily operations and discussions.
  • Performs daily patrol activities, including but not limited to opening and closing Downhill Trails, inspecting/identifying/marking bike trail hazards, trail signage, and responding to medical emergencies.
  • Handles lift evacuations, first aid and evacuation of injured guests from the mountain and all facilities of the resort, accident investigations, race patrol, and search and rescue operations
  • Daily monitoring of conditions and maintenance, including trail openings/closures, signage, ropes, pads, and clean up.
  • Ensures that no bikers remain on trails or lifts at the end of the day or during inclement weather.
  • Work closely with the Bike Trail crew to ensure trails are ready and safe for the public.  Making adjustments as needed.
  • Willing and able to perform all duties and responsibilities as a Bike Trail Builder, depending on the priorities of the Director of Summer Operations.
  • Monitor, organize, and ensure proper placement of medical supplies and evacuation gear. Including the proper ingress/egress for injuries in all locations along the bike trails.
  • Work with the Tech Rescue team to ensure proper lift evacuation training, gear, and response readiness.
  • Accurately complete all incident report forms and accident investigations.
  • Administers appropriate first aid treatment at the site of emergency, or in a specially equipped vehicle, performing such activities as application of splints, spinal immobilization, administration of oxygen, treatment of minor wounds or abrasions, or administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Transports or assists in the transport of patient(s) from the scene of an accident
  • Performs dispatch duties on a rotating schedule with other bike patrollers.
  • Performs rock blasting and explosives work on new and existing Mtn bike trails as needed every week.
  • Performs saw and timber work on new and existing Mtn bike trails as needed every week.
  • Perform all duties associated with a Via Ferrata Guide
  • Cross-train as Via Ferrata Guide to perform tours and high angle rescues as needed, dependent on the priorities set by the Director of Summer Operations.
  • Make sure all department processes are following USFS, State, Local, and Industry standards.
  • Work closely with all administrative and operational departments as it relates to day to day operation of a ski area.

Qualifications/Knowledge:

  • Previous patrol experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Industry Standards/Guidelines for Bike Patrol
  • Intermediate/Expert mountain biker.
  • EMT or WFR certification.
  • Saw 212 and explosives certifications preferred, not required.
  • Must be able to function effectively at elevations of 10,000 feet or higher.
  • Must be able to function effectively in inclement weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of medical, tech rescue, and general patrol equipment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be added to drivers list through TSV insurance company.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays, and evenings.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to gear and equipment consistent with the activity. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, and risk of adverse weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Taos Ski Valley, Inc. is often a fast-paced work environment, especially during holidays and Peak days. TSVI is located in a high-altitude alpine environment.  Position may require travel on uneven, snow-packed, or icy terrain and may be exposed to wet, cold, and/or humid conditions. Must be able to work in close quarters and with other staff.

 

Physical Demands of Position Include:

Bike Patrol, Bike trail building, and Via Ferrata are all physically arduous jobs in a high alpine environment. Prospective candidates must be willing and able to carry heavy packs, exceeding 50 lbs in a high-altitude environment as well as perform high angle and low angle rescues in an austere environment.
