Inventory Control Specialist (Steel Service Center)

Reports To: Operations Manager

Overview:

Target Steel, a mid-size steel service center, is seeking an experienced Inventory Control Specialist to oversee and manage inventory processes for our steel products. This individual will ensure accurate stock levels, monitor inventory movements, and optimize inventory management within our operations. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in steel inventory management, as well as experience in the steel industry, ensuring the efficient and smooth flow of materials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inventory Management:
    • Track and maintain accurate inventory levels of all steel products (e.g., sheets, coils, beams, pipes, etc.).
    • Ensure timely and accurate receipt, storage, and distribution of steel materials to various departments.
    • Perform regular inventory counts, including cycle counts, to verify physical stock against system records.
    • Monitor stock usage patterns to prevent overstocking or stockouts and optimize stock levels for efficient operations.
    • Assist with reconciling discrepancies in inventory records and working with the team to resolve issues promptly.
  • Material Handling:
    • Coordinate the movement and allocation of steel products to various departments based on production schedules and customer orders.
    • Maintain proper documentation of material movements and ensure all transactions are recorded in inventory management systems.
    • Collaborate with warehouse and shipping teams to ensure proper handling and storage of steel products.
  • System Management:
    • Utilize inventory management software to track product quantities, order requirements, and stock movements.
    • Generate inventory reports for management to assess product demand, stock levels, and warehouse utilization.
    • Perform data entry tasks to update inventory records and ensure real-time accuracy.
  • Quality Control and Safety:
    • Monitor the quality of incoming and outgoing steel products, ensuring they meet the company's standards and specifications.
    • Ensure that materials are handled according to safety guidelines to prevent accidents, damage, or inefficiencies.
    • Ensure that storage areas are properly organized, and materials are stored according to safety and quality standards.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Work closely with procurement, sales, and production teams to ensure timely and accurate inventory flow.
    • Provide accurate and timely inventory reports and insights to management.
    • Collaborate with external suppliers and logistics partners to track delivery schedules and resolve discrepancies.
Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • Minimum 3 years of experience in inventory control or a similar role, preferably within the steel industry or metal distribution.
    • Familiarity with steel products, including types, grades, sizes, and processing methods (e.g., cutting, slitting, etc.).
    • Previous experience using inventory management software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or other ERP systems).
  • Skills & Knowledge:
    • Strong understanding of inventory control best practices, including cycle counting, stock management, and warehouse organization.
    • Ability to interpret technical drawings and steel specifications is a plus.
    • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management abilities.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to lift and move steel products of varying weights and sizes.
    • Comfortable working in a warehouse environment, adhering to safety protocols.
