Tarleton State University seeks a renowned Associate or Full Professor to serve as the Director of the First-Year Writing Program and Writing Program Administrator. This esteemed individual will lead the department in fostering excellence in language education, cultural studies, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
This 12-month tenure-track position is based on Tarleton's main campus in Stephenville, Texas, with standard work hours from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, or according to work and teaching requirements. Occasional travel to other campuses or online may be necessary, as well as remote work during inclement weather or special circumstances.
The ideal candidate will possess exceptional teaching abilities, a strong research profile, and experience in administering writing programs. They will be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students, engage in doctoral student mentoring, foster a supportive environment within the PhD program, and contribute to institutional operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach a range of courses, including general education core curriculum.
- Develop course syllabi, select instructional materials, and design assessments.
- Evaluate student performance, provide timely feedback, and assess student learning outcomes.
- Promote active learning, critical thinking, and discussion among students.
- Offer academic support and guidance through office hours, feedback on assignments, and mentoring.
- Ensure adherence to university policies, academic integrity standards, and accreditation requirements related to teaching responsibilities.
- Stay current with developments in AI, composition theory, and digital rhetoric to enhance the writing program.
- Engage in ongoing professional development activities to improve teaching skills and explore new instructional strategies.
- Collaborate with colleagues, departmental faculty, and university staff to coordinate course offerings, share resources, and contribute to program development and improvement.
- Participate in institutional service roles, including college committees, advisory committees, student/faculty recruitment, and mentoring of new and part-time faculty.
Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity (20%):
- Conduct research, scholarship, or creative activity relevant to the applicant's academic discipline.
- Publish scholarly work, present research, or exhibit creative endeavors.
- Demonstrate potential for external funding, national impact, or professional recognition.
- Explore the integration of AI tools in writing courses, ensuring alignment with best practices.
Administrative Duties (20%):
- Oversee the First-Year Writing Program and Writing Intensive Program.
- Collaborate with the Coordinator of the First-Year Writing Program to develop meetings with faculty, mentor and evaluate online faculty, and mentor new faculty.
- Facilitate writing assessment each long semester of a rotation of writing courses and publish those results.
- Lead the Tarleton Today dual enrollment program and publish its assessment results.
- Develop guidelines and policies for the responsible use of AI in writing assignments and academic integrity.
- Organize faculty workshops and training sessions on AI-assisted writing instruction, digital literacy, and ethical AI use in the classroom.
