- Receives and screens telephone calls, emails, letters, and visitors, responding to routine requests for information, and refers complex matters to the appropriate person.
- Organizes and maintains records for the Crime Laboratory.
- Assembles relevant data and creates forms, memos, special reports, and letters of a technical and/or highly confidential nature. May be assigned by the Crime Laboratory Director, or in response, to a request or subpoena.
- Assists law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and Justice of the Peace offices in various counties with pertinent information.
- Verifies and submits a monthly billing report for the Crime Laboratory to the Business Office.
- Maintains records of testing performed by the Crime Laboratory, and compiles data for statistical reporting.
- Ensures completed Crime Laboratory reports are distributed to requesting law enforcement agencies and Medical Examiner’s staff.
- Performs medical transcription of autopsy reports and issues cremation permits, as requested.
- Assists the Crime Laboratory Director with special projects.
- Assists the Quality Manager with maintaining compliance data, quality control documents, and assigned special projects for maintaining laboratory accreditation.
- Acts as backup when the Toxicology Laboratory Secretary is out of the office including documenting, uploading, and distributing toxicology reports and making new case files.
- Prepares death certificates, which requires using the Texas electronic registration system mandated by the state, and prepares amended death certificates, as requested.
- Schedules appointments for Crime Laboratory Director.
- Prepares court documents for Crime Laboratory personnel.
- Notarizes documents for laboratory personnel.
- Reserves meeting rooms for laboratory personnel.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Must be experienced as a medical secretary and know some medical terminology.
- Proficiency in MS Office and spreadsheet software.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to multiple tasks, operates standard and automated office equipment.

- High School diploma or equivalent. Some college preferred.
- Four (4) full-time years of related work experience, including Two (2) years of full-time transcriptionist experience.
- Types fifty-five (55) WPM.

Tarrant County will conduct background checks on new hires that will include a criminal background check related to convictions and deferred adjudication in the past seven years and may include financial reports, motor vehicle records, employment records and educational attainment. A conviction or deferred adjudication is not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered individually.
While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb, stoop, lift, push, pull, and bend.
Salary : $20 - $22
