TITLE: ELECTRICIAN
SALARY RANGE: $38.08 hourly

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This employee assembles, installs, repairs, maintains, and tests electrical fixtures, equipment, and wiring used in the heating, power and signal systems or buildings, construction projects, and related facilities; cuts and installs conduit; pulls, splices, connects wiring and tests the completed circuits; installs and maintains motors, switches, circuit breakers, control boards, and related systems; wires floodlights, bridges and poles; repairs small appliances; assist in project layouts and cost estimates; plan location of outlets, meter panels, fuse boxes, etc.; reroute switches or conduits; and performs related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Assembles, installs, repairs, maintains and tests electrical fixtures, equipment and wiring used in
the heating, power and signal systems of buildings, construction projects and related
facilities.
Cuts and installs conduit.
Pulls, splices, connects wiring and tests the completed circuits.
Installs and maintains motors, switches, circuit breakers, control boards and related systems.
Repairs small appliances.
Assist in project layouts and cost estimation.
Plan location of outlets, meter panels, fuse boxes, etc. and reroute switches or conduits.
Operate shop machinery.
Keep simple records and prepare simple reports.
Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials and techniques of the trade and of materials, components, tools and instruments used in the trade.
- English language sufficient to read work orders and other work-related documents, and to write simple reports on work projects and requests for materials and tools.
- Basic arithmetic to perform electrical and electronic computations.
- Basic electrical theory and nature of electrical machinery and components.
- Troubleshooting and repairing of electrical and electronic equipment.
- Construction, operation and causes of malfunction of switch gear control panels and similarfacilities, pertinent codes, rules and regulations of the National Board of Underwriters.
- Safety precautions when working with electricity and while using and working around electronic tools and equipment.
Ability to:
- Read and interpret construction blueprints, electrical layouts, and wiring diagrams.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic components of heating boilers, overhead cranes and similar equipment.
- Drive a light truck in the performance of assigned duties.
- Read, determine and interpret color coding on wires and on components.
- Keep simple records and prepare simple reports.
- Work independently in absence of supervisor.
- Apply pertinent codes, rules and regulations of the National Board of Underwriters.
- Follow all safety practices generally recognized in the construction industry.
- Work from heights.
- Use basic hand and power tools.
Must have a total of three years of recent journeyman experience in electrical construction and maintenance, or have completed an apprenticeship program. Must have a high degree of mechanical aptitude and skill.
MILITARY:
Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a valid Driver's license. This is a sensitive classification, therefore applicants for appointment must pass a security clearance, which includes a check of employment references and criminal records. Must have a good driving record (i.e., very few, if any, traffic citations). Indoor and outdoor environment; exposure to hot, cold and inclement weather. Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require physical agility and stamina to perform heavy manual labor; maintain physical condition necessary for standing, crawling and working for prolonged period of time; possess manual dexterity to handle small fittings and to do precise work inside electrical and electronic equipment and components; possess hearing and vision sharpness to identify problems by differences in sound and sight; and color vision to see color codes in electrical wiring.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
Four months.
