GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This Maintenance Worker 2 position performs general maintenance work on school buildings and grounds. This position works independently or with other maintenance and crafts workers.
WHO MAY COMPETE ON EXAM:
All classified, permanent employees with the Cincinnati Public Schools who meet the qualifications listed below as of Tuesday, February 25, 2025. IT IS THE POLICY OF THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION THAT TEMPORARY TRANSFER AND/OR PROMOTION TIME WILL NOT BE COUNTED FOR EXAMINATION ELIGIBILITY PURPOSES (CIVIL SERVICE RULE 10, SECTION 2 – 8/3/89).
REQUIRED SERVICE RATING: Last 2 out of 3 ratings must be satisfactory.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have one year of satisfactory service as a Maintenance Worker 1.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
Six months.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EXAMPLES OF REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
May train or direct less experienced maintenance workers.
Operate heavy trucks and other motorized equipment and perform basic service maintenance on
such equipment to assure safe and efficient operation.
Load, unload and transfer furniture, equipment, tools and materials.
Build and restore lawns and grass areas.
Cuts and removes broken tree limbs.
Blacktops and/or patches and overlays driveways, parking lots, playgrounds.
Repair defective concrete.
Perform masonry and tile work.
Patch or replace deteriorated or damaged plaster on walls and ceilings.
Erect scaffolding and barricades.
Open clogged storm sewers.
Clean work sites.
Keep simple written records.
Instruct and train less experienced maintenance workers.
Assist crafts workers in performing general building maintenance work.
Perform related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
basic hand tools and standard power tools.
tools used in cement finishing and plastering.
tools used to dig and move dirt and gravel.
routine maintenance needs of tools and equipment.
measurements and measuring devices commonly used in construction.
tools used to determine horizontal and vertical planes and angles.
safety rules and practices when using construction tools and machinery.
characteristics of construction products and materials, including additives used to modify
them.
Epoxies and other chemical products sufficient to mix and/or use them efficiently and be
aware of risks involved and precautions to be taken when using them.
arithmetic sufficient to combine measurements, figure accounts and proportions of materials
needed, by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.
English language sufficient to read work orders and other work-related documents, and to
write simple reports on work projects and request for materials and equipment.
ABILITY TO:
drive a heavy duty dump or stake body truck and other types of motorized equipment used on
motorized equipment used on construction projects.
follow all safety practices generally recognized in the construction industry.
maintain simple written records
use basic hand and standard power tools.
use plastering and cement finishing tools.
use shovels, picks, hoes, rakes for working with dirt and gravel.
use measuring, leveling, squaring and plumbing devices.
read and work from work orders, sketches and diagrams.
set structural faults and/or need for improvements and repairs to school buildings and grounds.
erect scaffolding, make sure all safety factors are considered.
work at heights, depths and in confined, dirty or dusty places.
learn and apply new work processes.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a valid Driver License and good driving record (i.e., very few, if any, traffic citations) and have Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Must have physical strength and stamina to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting up to 100 pounds, manual dexterity to push, pull, twist, etc. when working with tools and equipment; and ability to hear normal voice levels and to see well.

The selection process is worth 100% of the exam grade and consists of a written exam. The passing score will be determined after the examination by the Civil Service Examiner together with the Secretary. Determination of the passing score will be based on the job analysis, analysis of examination results, consultation with subject matter experts or other professional methods.
1. ELIGIBILITY: Civil Service promotional exams are open to classified permanent employees only, who meet the eligibility and qualification requirements stated in the announcement. Unclassified and certificated employees are not eligible to participate in these exams.

6. SENIORITY CREDIT: A passing score on the written, oral and/or practical test must be achieved before credits for seniority will be given. A credit of one (1) point for completion of the first four years of creditable service and 0.6 points for completion of each of the next ten (10) years of such service will be added to the total exam grade. A maximum of seven (7) points for seniority for 14 years of creditable service can be added. To receive credit, service must have been continuous and with the City of Cincinnati, the Board, and/or the University of Cincinnati (including General/University Hospital) service up to July 1, 1977, when the University went under State control.
