POSITION:  SCHOOL COUNSELOR – SCHOOL YEAR 2025-2026

 

LOCATION:  To be determined

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the school principal and supervisor of student services, the school counselor is responsible for providing a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate program to students in the area of academic achievement, career, and educational decision making, and personal/social development.  The school counselor acts as a consultant in this regard to staff, parents, and the community.

 

REPORTS TO:  School Principal and Supervisor of Student Services

 

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:

At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:

  1. A Maryland Professional Eligibility Certificate, Standard Professional Certificate or Advanced Professional Certificate in the appropriate field of education.
  2. Experience as a teacher and/or counselor

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities and skills that apply to Essential Job Functions.) At the time of application, the candidate must have:

  1. Knowledge of American School Counselor Association National model and School Counselor competencies
  2. Knowledge of growth and developmental stages of
  3. Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups.
  4. Knowledge of Calvert County Public Schools policies and
  5. Knowledge of Calvert County Public Schools curriculum and instructional
  6. Demonstrated ability in written and oral
  7. Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, and community
  8. Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed
  9. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Implements a school counseling program that is data-driven, planned, sequential, and
  2. Plans and delivers structured lessons, presentations, and services designed to meet the identified guidance and counseling competencies in areas of academic achievement, career and educational development, and personal/social development through a variety of modalities, including individual advising, large group guidance, and small group
  3. Initiates individual and group sessions to address students’ personal, social, and academic
  4. Assists students in developing decision-making skills and provides related experiences to help them attain understanding of their abilities, interests, and
  5. Utilizes student and school data to monitor students’ academic
  6. Collaborates with administrators, teachers, and parents to promote rigorous educational and career planning for all students that includes structured academic and career plans leading toward graduation and
  7. Consults with parents and staff to appraise individual and collective student needs and interests and discusses appropriate recommendations for student educational, personal, and social
  8. Plans programs and services through which parents of all students will acquire an understanding of expectations, roles, and procedures for monitoring students’ academic and career planning processes and progress during critical transition
  9. Assists with the development of the school’s master
  10. Assists in the articulation and orientation of
  11. Reports and refers critical incidents that jeopardize the well-being of the student as obligated by law, Calvert County Public Schools’ policies and procedures, and ethical
  12. Collaborates in the development and implementation of programs targeting social and emotional skills that reduce negative behaviors and increase productive and positive behaviors between and among
  13. Thinks, concentrates, and interacts positively with
  14. Maintains regular, on-time
  15. Works flexible hours as
  16. Works under stress and meets all
  17. Attends special events such as open house and registration

OTHER DUTIES: Performs related work as required or assigned by the School Principal and/or Supervisor of Student Services.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  None

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.

 

UNUSUAL DEMANDS:   May be subject to a flexible work schedule.

 

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten (10) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the current Calvert County Public Schools salary schedule for teachers. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.

 

EVALUATION:  Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.

 

EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION:  2025-2026 school year

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.

 

State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.

 

House Bill 486 – Child Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct Prevention Statement

 

Pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland - House Bill 486 - Child Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct Prevention all applicants are required to report all former employers in which you may have had direct contact with minors. The applicant must submit the contact information of the current employer, all former school employers, and all former employers not school related. Applicants should also include contact information for organizations in which you have volunteered, coached, mentor, tutored or otherwise had direct contact with minors.
