JOB TITLE : Adjunct Faculty- General Education

DEPARTMENT : Academic Affairs

LOCATION : Pasadena Campus, NorCal Campus, Online Instruction

POSITION SUMMARY :

The General Education (GE) program at Pacific Oaks College is an important part of the undergraduate education. A well-planned General Education program of study will provide students with the skills they will need to excel in whatever disciplines they choose to pursue.

The Academic Affairs Department is currently seeking outstanding Practitioners-Scholars to join our diverse pool of adjunct faculty for the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters.

The adjunct faculty member will teach lower-division Bachelor's level courses in the General Education program; this is an ongoing job posting and you will be contacted if selected .

Pacific Oaks College follows the approved Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) for the General Education program :

  • PLO 1 : Written Communication - Communication by means of written language for informational, persuasive, and expressive purposes. Written communication may appear in many forms or genres. Successful written communication depends on mastery of the conventions of the written language, facility with culturally accepted structures for presentation and argument, awareness of audience, and other situation-specific factors.
  • PLO 2 : Information Literacy - According to the Association of College and Research Libraries, the ability to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use the needed information" for a wide range of purposes. An information-literate individual is able to determine the extent of information needed, access it, evaluate it and its sources, use the information effectively, and do so ethically and legally.
  • PLO 3 : Critical Thinking - The ability to think in a way that is clear, reasoned, reflective, informed by evidence, and aimed at deciding what to believe or do. Dispositions supporting critical thinking include open- mindedness and motivation to seek the truth.
  • PLO 4 : Oral Communication - Communication by means of spoken language for informational, persuasive, and expressive purposes. In addition to speech, oral communication may employ visual aids, body language, intonation, and other non-verbal elements to support the conveyance of meaning and connection with the audience.
  • PLO 5 : Quantitative Reasoning - The ability to apply mathematical concepts to the interpretation and analysis of quantitative information in order to solve a wide range of problems, from those arising in pure and applied research to everyday issues and questions. It may include such dimension as the ability to apply math skills, judge reasonableness, communicate quantitative information, and recognize the limits of mathematical or statistical methods.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Teach assigned GE courses at our Pasadena, San Jose, Online Campus
  • Become proficient (training offered) in Canvas (the learning management system)
  • Participate in Adjunct training, meetings, events and other College requirements
  • Grade and provide feedback on all assignments within 5 days of the due date
  • Post grades per scheduled deadlines
  • ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES :

  • Facilitate and participate in the weekly discussion postings
  • Actively respond to student emails and requests within 24-48 hours
  • Contribute to the course content using current events, current research articles, videos and other materials
  • Prepare and update course prior to the course start
  • Provide weekly announcements and overviews for each week of the course
  • Identify and refer at-risk students to academic support services
  • QUALIFICATIONS :

  • PhD degree preferred, Masters degree required in specific disciplines listed.
  • Graduate teaching experience
  • Exemplary Professional Experience
  • Desire to teach in Culture-centered Model, relational and
  • Licensure in Field for certain selected courses, if applicable
