Title:

3 YR Old-8th Gr. School Principal- Holy Cross, Sioux City IA

Primary Purpose:

Provide spiritual and academic leadership for Holy Cross Schools with the Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools system.

Essential Functions:

  • Promote and lead a Catholic Faith Community at Holy Cross.
  • Promote the success of all students by:

A. Facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community.

B. Advocate, nurture and sustain a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional development.

C. Ensure management of the organization, operations and resources for a safe, efficient and effective learning environment.

D. Collaborate with families and community members, respond to diverse community needs and mobilize community resources.

E. Act with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner.

  • Foster a professional environment including team building, staff trust and understanding confidentiality.
  • Supervise the implementation of established curriculum, evaluate lesson plans and observe classrooms to ensure instruction and materials are consistent with goals and provide for student achievement.
  • Recruit, interview and hire teachers and staff according to classroom needs and anticipated enrollment. Evaluate teachers and staff according to established schedules and protocols; assure evaluations are conducted in a fair and consistent manner that encourages accountability, growth and excellence, in accordance with Diocesan policy and contractual requirements.
  • Work and communicate with all system principals and BHCS President in a leadership team environment that promotes a system approach while understanding how each building fits into a consistent approach to faith, education, and community.
  • Communicate and work in tandem with the BHCS Director of Enrollment on planning and scheduling of open houses, shadow days, building tours and other enrollment events. Additionally, coordinate efforts with the Director of Enrollment in working with prospective students and their families.
  • In collaboration with the BHCS President and Director of Finance, maintain an annual budget for the school, including day-to-day operations. Oversee adherence to established budget and monitor all expenditures.
  • Participate in the Office of Advancement activities and events through presence and active participation.
  • Assure implementation of Diocesan and local board policy, including adherence with Safe Environment Policies as established by the Diocese and USCCB.
  • Assist with other projects and responsibilities as assigned by the President.
  • Regularly communicate, interact, and engage with the Parish Priest. Communicate and engage in the Parish and understand the vital connection.
  • Support the ideal that Catholic education is best realized by teachers who create the widest opportunities for students to receive Catholic religious instruction, to experience daily living in a Catholic community and to develop commitment and skill in serving others.

Interacts extensively with the following:

A. Pastor, Parish Finance Council, Parish staff

B. BHCS President

C. All BHCS Principals

D. BHCS Director of Enrollment

E. BHCS Finance Department

F. School Board members

G. Sioux City Diocesan Superintendent

H. Parents and parent organizations

Supervisory Relationships:

The principal is responsible for the assignment of work and delegation of responsibilities to faculty and staff. Authorized to interview, hire and fire employees in collaboration with the BHCS President and HR department; establish standards and evaluate employee performance; and initiate disciplinary procedures.


Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required or Preferred:

  • Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.
  • Conduct himself/herself as a moral person in compliance with the moral standards of the Roman Catholic Church, as outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and as set forth in the Administrative Manual of the Diocese of Sioux City.
  • Master’s degree in educational leadership required.
  • Possess, or have ability to obtain, an Iowa principal’s license for appropriate grade levels.
  • Experience in leadership and experience in enrollment management preferred.
  • Understanding of basic finance required; knowledge of concepts of private school funding preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills required, including the ability to coordinate and present at public meetings and events.
  • Familiarity with educational software programs is preferred.

  • Sit, stand, and walk for required periods of time within the classroom and school.

  • Use close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception along with the ability to focus vision.
  • Reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers to handle objects and operate tools, computers, and/or controls; some light lifting may be required.

Duties will require travel and attendance at evening and/or weekend meetings. Although work is performed primarily under inside environmental conditions, the required travel may result in temporary exposure to outside environmental conditions. Regular driving and valid driver’s license are required. Duties require a wide range of intellectual and practical problem-solving skills and comprehension of complex concepts.
