Job Description:
Decorah Middle School is seeking a passionate and dynamic Vocal Music Teacher to lead and inspire students in grades 5-8. The ideal candidate will lead the 5-8 choir program, teach general music classes for grades 5-7, and teach “electives” for our 8th grade exploratory program. Additionally, the candidate will collaborate with and assist the high school vocal music program in various capacities. This is a full-time position within a supportive and thriving school community dedicated to fostering student growth through music and the arts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct and lead the 5-8 choir program, preparing students for performances and special events while fostering a love for vocal music.
- Teach general music classes for grades 5-7.
- Develop and implement exploratory music courses for 8th-grade students that introduce creative and innovative aspects of music education.
- Teach a weekly adaptive music class
- Facilitate auditions for the annual Opus Honor Choirs, preparing and recording students for this prestigious opportunity.
- Collaborate with the high school vocal music program to support concerts, events, and special projects.
- Foster a classroom environment that is inclusive, engaging, and supportive of all students.
- Develop lesson plans that align with state and national music standards and district curriculum goals.
- Evaluate and monitor student progress, providing regular feedback to students and parents.
- Participate in school and district professional development opportunities and contribute to the school’s fine arts team.
- Maintain and manage classroom and program materials, including the choral music library and equipment.
Special Note:
- An additional stipend will be provided for extra responsibilities
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or a related field
- Valid Iowa teaching license with appropriate endorsements.
- Strong background in vocal pedagogy and choral conducting.
- Ability to teach music literacy through hand-sign Solfeggio and Takadimi.
- Experience teaching middle school students preferred.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, parents, and community members.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
- Proficient piano skills preferred
