Team Elmer's is seeking to fill an opening for a Safety Specialist in the Traverse City area.

This position will conduct routine safety audits and inspections of constructions sites as well as plants throughout the company's business region ensuring all health and safety regulations and company policies are in compliance with all applicable State and Federal laws. Additionally, this position will also be responsible for developing and administering health and safety training throughout the year.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Assist Division Managers, Project Managers and Foreman with health and safety on construction sites; JSA's, safety talks, safety training, pre-planning, audits and inspections, as well as reporting.
  • Provide field safety support for construction activities.
  • Review jobsites, pit and plant locations; conduct audits for compliance with health and safety regulations making recommendations accordingly. Report audit findings and track corrective actions required.
  • Provide briefings to Division Managers periodically on status of safety performance and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Serve field employees as primary customer generating good will when making recommendations.
  • Assist in the implementation of internal safety policies and procedures to be followed by employees.
  • Assist in analyzing in safety data to lead and coordinate the safety effort for continual improvement.
  • Represent the organization in the community and / or on industry safety groups and programs.
  • Conduct health and safety related training as needed including new hire safety orientation.
  • Stay current on any changes to laws and regulations that impact the company relating to safety.
  • Travel by vehicle daily to various jobsites and locations throughout the company's territory and / or where the company has a presence.
  • Use Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs with skill and ease to complete job duties.
  • Research regulations and procedures through the internet or regulatory books / manuals.
  • Conduct incident investigations to determine root cause and corrective actions.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and experience in the health and safety field is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in construction or general industry
  • Knowledge of above ground mining and Mine Safety and Health Administration Standards (MSHA) preferred
  • OSHA 30 Hour Construction Health and Safety and / or OSHA 30 Hour General Industry Health and Safety certifications preferred
  • First Aid / CPR / AED certification preferred
  • Ability to develop training materials and presentations.
  • Ability to teach in the field as well as in a classroom environment
  • Strong communication skills, writing skills and the ability to handle confidential information
  • Highly self-motivated, detail oriented and organized
