TRS is currently hiring for the following position:

Retirement Operations Specialist (New Retirements) 

*Salary range is low to mid 40s

**This position will be eligible for a hybrid work schedule (2 days in office/3 days remotely) after a training period***

Job Summary                                                                                                                                               

Under general supervision of the operations manager, the incumbent will perform a full range of duties with respect to processing members’ refunds and service credit and payments. Incumbents prepare appropriate correspondence and follow up on all requests and correspondence regarding refunding accounts, service credit, lost membership/mergers and service payments. This will include responding to incoming telephone inquiries, meeting members in person, and replying to correspondence from members regarding reasons. Incumbents process refund applications, lost membership/mergers, service payment and ensure that member files contain the appropriate documentation in order to complete such tasks according state/federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies of the Teachers Retirement System. When such information is missing, the member is notified promptly to provide it.

Minimum Qualifications & Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from a (4)  four year accredited college or (3) three years of equivalent experience in a financial services or business environment, or a combination of education and work experience in technical bookkeeping, accounting, auditing, claims adjusting, eligibility determination or reviewing and analyzing requests for determination of retirement benefits or other related benefits.

Preferred Additional qualifications

  • Knowledge of operating basic computer operating system and equipment;
  • Basic arithmetic; and clerical accounting methods, procedures and terminology.
  • Ability to analyze data and determine correct information for benefits.
  • Ability is required to communicate effectively; and, to determine when specific laws should be applied to certain types of benefits, rollovers and disbursements.
  • Ability is required to take initiative to solve problems; to resolve complex issues involving retirement benefits; and to make independent decisions in accordance with laws, rules and regulations and applying policies to difficult problems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review applications for eligibility and confirm all information completed properly.
  • Ensure compliance to plan provisions, state and federal regulations.
  • Ensure applications have been processed and ready for the correct payroll.
  • Process overpayment from cash receipts.
  • Process address updates and update beneficiary information.
  • Generate updated withdrawn cost calculation when needed to post the service payment.
  • Provide prompt, accurate, and friendly customer service to members, beneficiaries, and employers regarding processes, procedures, and regulations of the retirement system.
  • Ability to manage high volume work flow queues to ensure agency standards and payroll dates are met.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
