What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technical Writer 4 position at Team Red Dog?
Engage with high-level executives, legal teams, and sustainability leaders to drive global environmental impact! Team Red Dog is looking for a highly skilled and confident Technical Writer to support their client’s Environmental Sustainability Government (ESG) team for Cloud & Enterprise Services Infrastructure (CESI). This team is responsible for collecting and reporting energy and water efficiency data for data centers worldwide, ensuring compliance with global environmental regulations.
This role is not for someone who prefers to work behind the scenes—it requires a proactive communicator who is comfortable engaging with executives, legal teams, and auditors to extract key insights and develop impactful documentation. Candidates with experience writing executive briefs for leadership, government agencies, or military entities (such as the Pentagon) will stand out.
Top Required Skills (Must-Haves):
- 8 years of technical writing experience, with expertise in structuring complex information.
- 7 years of experience writing persona-based documents—engaging with executives and subject matter experts to tailor documentation.
- 1 year of legal writing experience—knowledge of compliance documentation and regulatory standards.
- Exceptional communication skills—ability to confidently engage with senior leaders, ask critical questions, and translate technical information into clear, high-impact documentation.
- Experience writing executive briefs for C-suite leadership, government agencies, or military stakeholders (e.g., Pentagon officials) is a strong plus.
Opportunity Overview:
Join a team that plays a critical role in global energy efficiency initiatives. This team ensures that Microsoft’s data centers meet EU energy efficiency regulations and contribute to corporate sustainability goals. The data they produce directly influences public sustainability reports and supports global environmental compliance efforts.
As a lead technical writer, you will be responsible for creating high-level executive documentation that shapes how Microsoft reports environmental sustainability metrics. This role is fast-paced and high-visibility, requiring a writer who is not afraid to ask the tough questions, challenge unclear information, and confidently interact with senior leadership.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop detailed technical documentation related to energy efficiency, compliance, and sustainability reporting.
- Conduct executive-level interviews, working with legal entities, auditors, and leadership to extract key information and translate it into clear, structured documents.
- Gather and organize efficiency data for power and water usage in data centers, working with subject matter experts to ensure data accuracy.
- Ensure all documentation meets regulatory standards and aligns with global environmental compliance mandates.
- Work with legal and sustainability teams to compile reports for government entities and public-facing corporate sustainability reports.
- Maintain document repositories and track updates, revisions, and regulatory changes.
Qualifications/Experience:
- 8-10 years of technical writing experience with a focus on documentation for engineering, sustainability, or compliance.
- Experience creating executive briefs and high-level reports—preferably for government agencies, legal entities, or corporate leadership.
- Strong, confident, and proactive personality—comfortable leading conversations, asking direct questions, and engaging with senior stakeholders.
- Experience working in high-stakes environments such as government reporting, military briefings, or corporate sustainability disclosures.
- Familiarity with legal and compliance writing—experience documenting regulatory policies or working with legal teams.
- Experience in environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, or cloud infrastructure is a plus.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, and manage multiple documentation projects at once.
