What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Editor position at TeamPeople?
Primary Function
Research, document, and ensure the accuracy, fairness, and suitability of all editorial material published in the client magazine and in other special magazine projects. Works on departments pieces and short features.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Verifies and substantiates all statements of fact, data, historical information, and identities in both text and captions using reputable and appropriate sources.
- Works cooperatively with editors, writers, photographers, lawyers, and consultants.
- Communicates with subject experts in private and governmental agencies, academic institutions, and industries.
- Defines key issues and identifies factual problems within text and captions.
- Weighs accuracy with editorial considerations, suggesting wording to correct information while maintaining the writer’s tone and style.
- Demonstrates attention to detail, nuance, and implication.
- Anticipates research needs and determines an effective course of action, being particularly alert to legal issues such as liability, bias, plagiarism, and copyright issues.
Skills & Qualifications
- Curiosity about topics covered in the magazine and the ability to grasp new subject matter quickly.
- Strong language skills and an appreciation of word usage, grammar, and writing style.
- Good communication skills, including the ability to concisely explain a problem and to articulate a solution.
- Good people skills to deal positively and productively with a wide range of personalities.
- Superior organization and the ability to handle multiple tasks under the pressure of extremely tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word.
- Candidates must have fact-checking /editorial research experience.
- Knowledge of the InCopy K4 platform is a significant plus but not mandatory.
- Must be comfortable using a MAC.
- Foreign languages is a plus.
Education & Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in editorial research.
- A college degree is preferred, but candidates with 3 years of experience without a degree will be considered.
- Foreign language skills are a plus.
