Network Lab Engineer
Location: Phoenix, AZ - Onsite work only
Job Description
A Network Lab Engineer is responsible for designing, building, maintaining, and managing a controlled network environment within a laboratory setting, conducting tests on new network technologies, troubleshooting network issues, and ensuring optimal performance of network hardware and software, often with a focus on research and development activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Network Design and Implementation:
1. Design and build complex network topologies within the lab environment, including LAN, WAN, and VPN configurations.
2. Install, configure, and manage network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and access points.
3. Implement network protocols and security measures within the lab environment.
Testing and Evaluation:
1. Conduct performance testing on new network technologies, hardware, and software to evaluate their efficacy and stability.
2. Develop and execute test scripts to analyze network performance metrics like latency, throughput, and packet loss.
3. Analyze test results and provide detailed reports to engineering teams.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance:
1. Identify and troubleshoot network issues within the lab environment, including connectivity problems, performance bottlenecks, and security breaches.
2. Monitor network health and performance using network monitoring tools.
3. Implement updates, patches, and configuration changes to maintain network stability and security.
Documentation and Reporting:
1. Maintain comprehensive documentation of network configurations, test procedures, and results.
2. Prepare technical reports summarizing findings from network testing and analysis.
3. Collaborate with engineering teams to share knowledge and best practices.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Technical Expertise:
1. Deep understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, MPLS, OSPF)
2. Proficiency in network hardware configuration (Cisco, Juniper, etc.)
3. Knowledge of network security concepts (firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems)
4. Familiarity with scripting languages (Python, Bash) for automation
5. Knowledge of Routing/Switching/ other Networking gear used for building a Lab
6. Cisco, Aruba, Dell products experience is a plus
Problem-Solving Skills:
1. Excellent analytical and troubleshooting abilities to diagnose complex network issues
2. Ability to think critically and develop effective solutions to network challenges
Communication Skills:
1. Clear and concise communication of technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
2. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
Work Environment:
Primarily based in a laboratory environment with access to various network hardware and software.
May require occasional on-site support for network deployments or troubleshooting.
