VMWare Engineer with Networking experience or Network Engineer with VMWARE experience vice versa.
Working Hybrid out of Fort Mill South Carolina (Just south of Charlotte NC) or Austin Texas office - in theory 3 days week but being there for "the moments that matter" is more important than a specific day-count.
Long term consulting assignment 12 to 18 months
What we need is a combination of VMware and Networking experience.
- VMWare (VM sizing, Definition) Infrastructure Engineers , focusing on on-premises applications running in VMWare VMs.
- Basics of networking (understanding of ports, protocols, firewalls, etc.)
- Basic networking performance (can this application perform if it's running in Data Center A and talking to a database in Data Center B)
- A lot of corporate archeology (a lot of stuff isn't documented and needs to be reverse engineered via grit)
- We need people who can help us identify where applications are running currently, help identifying ports and protocols that need to be enabled in our new data center and working with engineering teams to complete the migration of apps.
Regarding Networking - they don't need to know everything, but they should know most of it. If they only know one or two things, there's no need to submit their profile
* Networking:
- Understanding the OSI model of networking (Specifically layers 2, 3 and 7)
- Understanding the private IP ranges (, , )
- CIDR notation
- VLANs and Subnet relationships
- Gateways and routing between networks
- OS-level network connection troubleshooting on Windows and Linux
- ipconfig/all, nc, tracert, traceroute, netstat -tuanpl suetc
* Network traffic Load Balancing:
- Understanding load balancing in general
- Methods for balancing traffic load between servers (round robin, least connections, etc)
- Difference between and when to use Layer 4 vs Layer 7 load balancing
* DNS:
- DNS record types (A, Alias, CNAME, etc)
* Firewall:
- General common port knowledge, 22 80 443 3389 etc
- Understanding of statefull vs. stateless (allowing established/related traffic)

Job Overview:
The Sr. Infrastructure Engineer will possess technical expertise and engineering skills and is considered a leading subject matter expert for designing technical infrastructure solutions involving, server hardware, hypervisors, VMs, and cloud solutions, with general knowledge of Storage and Networking. This individual is a thought leader and driver of change who must be able to work in a fast-paced, start-up-like environment, facilitate implementation, and influence the adoption of new processes and tools.
Responsibilities:
- Drive architecture designs with an 'automation first' approach; Infrastructure as code
- Enterprise-level architect for physical/cloud compute as well as hypervisor-level
- Identify areas where automation can replace manual activities for deploying new infrastructure and/or maintaining current infrastructure
- Identify risks in the environment that threaten stability, resiliency, performance, and security
- Apply a continuous improvement mindset and work cross-functionally to mitigate non-functional risks by enhancing processes and the control environment
- Responsible for operating system templates and help push deployment automation
- Identify technology gaps and evaluate tools/products to resolve those gaps
- Participate in application roadmap planning with stakeholders, application teams, solutions architects and other engineering groups
- Participates in the creation and maintenance of metrics and institutes a process for continuous improvement
- Participates in Kanban delivery model to deliver sprint releases through stories/epics utilizing Jira to track all work

Requirements:
- 5 years of experience as a Sr. Infrastructure Engineer
- 5 years' experience with Cisco MDS and switching
- Proven experience building enterprise storage solutions (Infinidat, EMC, NetApp)
- Proven track record designing, building, and automating data management solutions across all AWS storage services (EBS, EFS, S3, Glacier, Storage Gateway, etc)
- Proven expertise with enterprise backup and recovery software solutions such as Cohesity
Preferences:
- Infinidat product portfolio (InfiniBox / Infinibox SSA), NetApp, EMC Powermax
- CI/CD (GitHub, Atlassian, Jenkins, Puppet, Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, JSON, YAML)
