Position Overview
The Lead Low-Voltage Technician is responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of low-voltage systems in residential and light commercial projects. These systems include structured cabling, custom-integrated audio/video systems, lighting controls, motorized shading, security systems, and home automation technologies.
This role combines technical expertise with team leadership, ensuring projects are completed efficiently, on time, and to the highest standards of quality. The Lead Technician works closely with project managers, clients, and other trades to deliver exceptional results in the field.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- System Installation
- Lead the installation of low-voltage systems, including cabling, audio/video, lighting controls, shading systems, security, access control, and home automation.
- Ensure systems are installed to meet design specifications, industry standards, and project timelines.
- Technical Leadership
- Serve as the primary on-site contact for project progress, technical issues, and quality assurance.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and training to Field Technicians to ensure team success.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve technical issues during the installation and testing phases.
- Project Coordination
- Collaborate with the Project Manager and other stakeholders to plan work schedules, material delivery, and project milestones.
- Communicate project updates, challenges, and requirements to the Project Manager.
- Assist with equipment programming, testing, and commissioning to ensure full system functionality.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate documentation of installation work, wiring diagrams, and system configurations.
- Submit daily field reports, including job progress, equipment needs, and team performance.
- Identify and document change order requests as required.
- Client Interaction
- Serve as a professional and knowledgeable point of contact for clients on-site.
- Address client concerns and ensure a positive customer experience.
Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in low-voltage system installation, including structured cabling, audio/video, security, lighting, and home automation.
- Proven leadership abilities with experience supervising field teams and coordinating on-site work.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams, and system schematics.
- Strong knowledge of low-voltage codes, standards, and best practices for residential and light commercial installations.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with project management software, test equipment, and hand/power tools.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with team members, clients, and other trades.
- Certifications (preferred): CTS, CEDIA, BICSI, or equivalent industry certifications.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working on construction sites, in tight spaces, and on elevated surfaces.
