SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Advanced Plastic Engineer (Mold Flow Expert) is responsible for performing mold flow simulation and analysis using AutoDesk MoldFlow. The engineer will use this information to make recommendations regarding part design, material, tooling and process throughout the product and program life cycle. As a member of Techniplas’ corporate engineering team, this person supports in the investigation of current production tooling deficiencies through process engineering and simulation activities.

 

JOB DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform Moldflow simulation activity for new part and tooling development, including fill, pack, cool and warp
  • Analyze Moldflow results and recommend part design, gating and process changes to improve part quality and process window
  • Perform new tool qualification using a Scientific Injection Molding (SIM) principles.
  • Develops and documents process and set-up procedures
  • Design new manufacturing processes aimed at improving quality, efficiency and output using Scientific Injection Molding (SIM) principles.
  • Coordinates activities with program management, design, quality and tooling teams to ensure products & processes meet design requirements.
  • Continually improves manufacturing methods and process/design changes.
  • Continually investigates and resolves manufacturing process problems.
  • Supports quality team with quality issues and customer concerns.
  • Acts as a liaison between manufacturing and selected customers and jobs that have been subcontracted.
  • Assists in ensuring safety equipment is operational and safety procedures are followed to maintain high safety standards.
  • Performs process activities which involve conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures, or equipment.
  • Train process technicians and mold setters as well as molding equipment operators to verify new or updated processes are performed correctly.
  • Assists in planning, developing and quoting of new products for profit potential and manufacturing feasibility.
  • Completes and performs other duties/tasks as may be assigned.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, scientific field, or 6 years of experience required
  • Completion of Master Molder, PTE, or equivalent certificate, preferred
  • Demonstrated experience running MoldFlow software simulations
  • Expert MoldFlow certification, preferred
  • Experience training and leading small technical teams, preferred
  • Automotive injection molding experience preferred; specifically interior trim and decorative surfaces
  • Excellent knowledge of thermoplastic resins, processing, tooling and troubleshooting
  • Experience working with Injection Molding Machines (IMM) required
  • Knowledge of DOE & Six Sigma
  • Demonstrate problem solving ability
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to coordinate activities, teach and explain concepts to customers and internal team members.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to visually inspect parts produced; specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust to focus;
  • Must be able to frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
  • Must be available to work off shifts (afternoons and midnights).    
  • Climbing, bending, stooping is done on frequent basis.  Crawling or climbing into machinery is performed occasionally.  A Process Technician is on foot for most of the shift.  Ladders are permanently fixed to the machinery per OSHA guidelines and must be climbed occasionally.
  • Once or twice per shift a nozzle tip must be removed.  A pry bar is used which requires physical exertion. 
  • Infrequently a conveyor must be moved.  This may happen twice per week.  Lifting, pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds is required occasionally.

Manual Dexterity: Must use moderate speed and accuracy in operating machines and retrieving parts.

Physical Effort: Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion with above average weight materials or equipment.

Working Conditions: The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts;
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles in a climate-controlled environment;
  • Works where the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
