Galore Creek Mining Corporation is seeking a Geotechnical Engineering or Technologist Summer Student to support field investigations at the Galore Creek Project in northwest British Columbia! 

Reporting to the Geotechnical field leads, the Summer Student, Geotechnical Engineering is responsible for supporting geotechnical and hydrotechnical field investigations for a large and complex prefeasibility-level study at an exploration site in northern British Columbia. The successful candidate will contribute as a member of the field team, assisting with field planning, execution, and data processing, while upholding rigorous safety standards.

This outstanding opportunity will be office based from our Vancouver office until the start of the field season in mid-June, then based at the Galore Creek project site on a 15 on/13 off (days) rotational basis, inclusive of travel. This rotation is subject to change as the project requires.  

Overview 

Galore Creek Mining Corporation currently operates two camps on the project site.  One road accessible camp (98 person capacity) and one helicopter supported camp (160 person capacity).    

Located in the territory of the Tahltan Nation in northwestern British Columbia, Galore Creek is one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper-gold-silver deposits. Galore Creek Mining Corporation (GCMC), a partnership between Newmont Corporation (Newmont) and Teck Resources Limited (Teck), is committed to advancing the asset towards a development decision with meaningful input from the Tahltan Nation and BC regulators. Responsibilities 
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures  
  • Contribute as a junior member of the field team and provide technical leadership and guidance, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of a multi-faceted technical program
  • Work closely with the Geotechnical leads to plan, execute, and collect data related to Geotechnical and hydrotechnical investigations


Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a Geotechnical or related engineering degree (Geological, Mining, Civil, Environmental), or equivalent diploma of technology, from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Holds a valid and non-expired Canadian Drivers license is a firm requirement
  • Strong data management skills, and proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, and the ability to complete work in a timely manner
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; the ability to write clear and concise reports and present technical information to a variety of audiences 
  • Ability to work in remote terrain, uneven surfaces, and all-weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 25 kg safely and comfortably. 
  • Familiarity with specialized software for field level data collection/interpretation is an asset. This includes Leapfrog, Aqtesolv, RST/Solinst products, and data management software
  • Familiarity with a Geographic Information System (GIS) software (ArcGIS/QGIS) is an asset
  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of data analysis techniques; familiarity with QA/QC procedures is a plus
  • Related previous work experience is NOT required but is an asset
  • Hydrogeological coursework (UBC EOSC 329 or equivalent) and field school is an asset (UBC EOSC 428 or equivalent). Other field school experience in surveying or geologic mapping is also considered an asset (UBC CIVL 235, EOSC 223, EOSC 328 or equivalent)
  • Coursework and/or work experience with rock mechanics (UBC MINE 303 or equivalent) and/or soil mechanics (UBC CIVL 210, CIVL 311 or equivalent) is a plus

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
