Outside Machinist Handyperson
Summary:
- A handyperson must have a basic knowledge of the ship building industry and show a willingness to learn, strive, and continually improve in all aspects of his/her work. Capable of accomplishing the installation repair, and maintenance of ship's fluid systems which include pumps, compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, actuators and valves with some Journeyman assistance and / or oversite. Capable of accomplishing the testing of equipment to ensure systems meet 4E specifications, references and drawings with some Journeyman assistance and / or oversite. Capable of accomplishing the installation and testing of various shop equipment. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate knowledge of shipyard safety best practices (i.e. job hazard analysis (JHA), fire prevention, electrical safety, tool safety, fall protection, hazardous waste operations, confined space entry, hot work operations, etc.).
- Demonstrate the ability to operate and maintain a sand blaster, parts washer, steam cleaner and paint booth.
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic math and measuring (i.e. addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals, how to read a tape measure, etc.)
- Ability to properly care for and use basic tools (e.g. flashlight, tape measure, pliers, feeler gauge, Allen wrench, crescent wrench, combination wrench, socket wrench, Ford wrench, pipe wrench, ball-peen hammer, soft hammer, Phillips and flat head screwdriver).
- Knowledgeable of how to find compartments of the ship by space number, and know port from starboard, and forward from aft.
- Possess a basic assortment of hand tools required as a Handyperson and know how to use them.
- Follow instructions exactly as given.
- Basic knowledge of ship building procedures.
- Work well with others and be able to handle constructive criticism from a mentor.
- Work safely and know the safety rules and regulations as they apply to you.
- Know the company Quality Policy and be able to state it when required.
- Must want to excel in the shipyard.
- Blank and tag equipment in accordance with NAVSEA Standard Items.
- Package, label and store material in an organized fashion.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Naval Ship Work Authorization Form (WAF) procedures.
- Possess general knowledge of 4E specifications, references and drawings (including category I and II NAVSEA Standard Items).
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. and seek assistance with weights over 50 lbs.
- Able to withstand environmental factors such as:
- Outside weather conditions
- High, precarious places
- Exposed to fumes and airborne particles
- Very loud noise level
- Occasionally perform other physical activities as required, such as:
- Stooping
- Bending
- Squatting
- Climbing (including but not limited to vertical and incline ladders, masts, and kingposts)
- Crawling (including but not limited to through scuttles, manhole covers, tanks, and voids)
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Experience Requirements:
- 1st Class = 2 – 3 years of experience working in a shipyard.
Other Requirements:
- Must be able to obtain a government facility security pass/DBIDS.
- Must be able to pass Drug Screening, Work Ability Screening.
- Must be 18 years of age or older to apply.
- Some college, trade school, or technical training preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of marine and/or shipyard experience.
Salary : $23
