Safety Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

In this critical role, the Safety Specialist will assist in the implementation, organization and execution of safety in line with Tekni-Plex Safety Principles at the facility.  Additional responsibilities include management of related plant capital projects, optimization of the plant utilities and providing support. The Safety Specialist will report to the site Plant Manager and will partner with plant operations and human resources to provide a safe and healthy work environment for all who are present at the facility.  This includes development and enhancement of employee involvement within the safety program to promote an environment that is zero accident driven.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Corporate Safety:

• Ensure implementation of Tekni-Plex Safety Standards and Safety Principles is integrated into plant Safety Policy
• Disseminate of safety information received from the Global Safety Department or Business Unit to all employees at the facility
• Responsible for consolidation and feedback of specified safety matters (eg monthly reports, accident reports) on safety system to the Global Safety Department and Business Unit.

Plant Safety:

• Maintain and update all written policies and procedures pertaining to employee, visitor and vendor safety.
• Responsible for implementing program of safety observations, audits and daily reviews at the facility.
• Ensure that established safety policies, practices, rules, regulations and procedures are followed to maintain a safe work environment.
• Investigate and report recordable accidents, near miss incidents, medical only incidents and establishing root cause analysis for prevention of future occurrences.
• Coordinate safety award and recognition programs.
• Conduct quarterly lifting equipment inspections (hoist, rigging, cables).
• Annual update and review of Plant Emergency Response Plan and Emergency Preparedness to include drills and training.
• Responsible for Safety Training Program including training for BBP, Fall Protection, Heat Stress, Confined Space, Electrical Safety, Exposed Blades, First Aid, Powered Industrial Tools, PPE, Machine Guarding, Ergonomics, Hot Works, Lifting Equipment, Fire Safety, Hand Tools, etc.
• Enter and make updates in safety systems and programs.
• Additional duties as assigned by management and operations.
• Conduct and oversee all safety related training requirements both in class and computer based
• Perform on shift safety walks with supervisors and manager
• Assemble and organize documentation for safety compliance review by Corporate Safety Team
• Conduct safety aspect of new employee orientation
• Serve as support liaison for on-site fire brigade

Compliance:

• Confer with local regulatory agencies to discover and ensure compliance with local environmental quality standards, industrial practices, and new development in pollution abatement.
• Coordinate safety related activities at the facility to ensure compliance with Tekni-Plex requirements
• Maintain OSHA logs and related compliance and ensure prompt reporting of Worker’s Compensation claims to Human Resources.
• Ensure plant complies with OSHA standards and regulatory reporting requirements.

Project Management:

• Ensure that all projects adhere to the Tekni-Plex CER process

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

• Bachelor’s Degree Safety, Environmental Health or related.
• Minimum of 3 years of related experience
• OSHA and Environmental Compliance and Regulations
• Minimal Supervision with Excellent Verbal and Written Communication Skills

Desired:

• Bi-lingual English/Spanish
• ISO9000 Lead Auditor qualification
