Job Summary:
Successful Chemist candidates will be part of a team responsible for in-depth research, discovery and problem-solving related to chemical and biological detection for US Government and Commercial markets. Our products are based on “outside-the-lab” platforms and encompass detection and identification instruments for chemical and biological weapons, explosives, narcotics, toxic industrial chemicals, and other hazardous materials. Researchers at this level are expected to understand the applicable technology platforms, work independently on multiple projects, and be able to shift priorities as needed.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the development, troubleshooting, and testing of proof-of-concept/prototype equipment.
  • Develop methods for new analytical applications for West Lafayette current products & projects.
  • Plan, design and carry out experiments, analyze data and report results to manager and team for 1 or more projects on a weekly basis for West Lafayette, in the laboratory and in the field. Must be able to plan experiments from conception to completion.
  • Compile reports and participate in customer reviews in West Lafayette and in the field.
  • Maintain essential inventory and ensure common areas of the lab are well-kept and orderly.
  • Continually participate in advanced training programs to increase product and technology knowledge with ability to share learnings with team and more junior staff.
  • Domestic travel is expected to be approximately 5%.
Job Qualifications:
  • Background must include:
    • B.S. degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Physics or related engineering disciplines required.
    • This position requires U.S. Citizenship.
    • Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience in chemistry related fields or products (M.S. with 0 years' experience).
    • Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) skills required.
    • Experience with wet chemistry and good laboratory practices are preferred.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • High energy, proactive orientation, self-motivated.
    • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with team members and customers.
  • Proven experience required
    • Perform basic test design – define the question being asked and develop single-variable experiments to answer.
    • Act independently to drive experimentation & testing.
    • Drive toward solutions to project goals.
    • Compile data in a way it can be shared across the organization on a weekly basis.
    • Able to troubleshoot and resolve science and project issues.
    • Communicate with team members to ensure project goals and timelines are met.
    • Conduct basic instrumentation testing on laboratory analysis equipment.
  • Other Qualifications
    • Prior experience with Mass Spectrometers (FLIR or competitor) would be a plus.
    • Prior military experience would be a plus.
  • DOD Security Clearance would be a plus.
Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, legal permanent resident, asylee, refugee or must be eligible to apply for and obtain the appropriate export control license from the U.S. Departments of State or Commerce.
