Peer Support Specialist
Reports To: Program Supervisor
Department: Dane County Care Center
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Travel:
Job Status: Part-time
Shift/Schedule: 15-20 hours/week
Position Summary
The primary function of the Peer Support Specialist is to provide support by engaging and encouraging peers in recovery from mental health and/or substance use disorders. This role provides peers with a sense of community and belonging, supportive relationships, and valued roles. The goal is to promote wellness, self-direction, and recovery, enhancing the skill and ability of peers to engage in their chosen roles.

Essential Functions
- Self-identify as being in recovery for purposes of gaining participants’ trust;
- Assist participants in articulating their strengths and goals for recovery;
- Coach participants toward learning and practicing new recovery skills;
- Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the specialist's own recovery experience;
- Support participants in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services;
- Encourage participants to participate in social, recreational, and other therapeutic activities that enhance interpersonal skills and develop social relationships.
- Document progress, and record information;
- Provide a sense of belonging, supportive relationships, and community;
- Promote wellness, independence, self-direction, and recovery;
- Selectively share personal Recovery Story with participants, providing hope and help in changing behaviors and patterns;
- Help participants explore opportunities with services, emotional growth, and life recovery goals;
- Maintain confidentiality;
- Communicate with supervisors and other staff about the needs, skills, and goals of the participants
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED Required with 2 years of applicable work experience OR
- Bachelor's Degree in related field
- Second Language Preferred
- Must be a Certified Peer Support Specialist through the State of Wisconsin
