Position Summary: Telra School District is seeking a compassionate, patient, and dedicated Special Education Assistant to provide one-on-one support to students with diverse learning needs. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with teachers and other staff members to help create a positive and inclusive learning environment for students. The Special Education Assistant will provide individualized assistance to students with disabilities, ensuring they have the tools and resources to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Key Responsibilities:
- One-on-One Support: Provide individualized assistance to students with disabilities, helping them with daily tasks, classroom activities, and academic work to ensure success in the educational setting.
- Behavior Management: Monitor and support students in managing behaviors and provide positive reinforcement and guidance in accordance with individualized behavior plans.
- Academic Support: Help students with tasks such as reading, writing, math, and other subjects by offering explanations, accommodations, and modifications as directed by the teacher or individualized education plan (IEP).
- Social and Emotional Support: Foster social skills development by facilitating peer interactions, helping students navigate social situations, and providing emotional support when needed.
- Collaboration: Work closely with special education staff, therapists to ensure each student's specific needs are being met and progress is tracked.
- Record Keeping: Assist in documenting student progress, behavior, and daily activities as required by the IEP or other educational plans.
- Other Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned to support the success of students in the classroom and school environment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in special education or related field preferred.
- Experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities, is preferred.
- Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude when working with students with diverse needs.
- Ability to adapt and respond to the unique needs of students.
- Understanding of behavioral management strategies and special education laws and policies.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, carry, and assist students as needed.
- Ability to sit, stand, and kneel for extended periods of time.
Work Environment:
- This position requires working in a classroom setting, with periodic opportunities for outdoor activities and student field trips.
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for school events or meetings.
