JOB SPECIFICATION DATABASE AND SOFTWARE SPECIALIST THE POSITION Under general supervision, implement database and other software solutions in a complex network, including a variety of databases and software applications, software installations, and configurations; provide support for student system databases and related applications; and perform other related work as required.  The position is responsible to the Director of Special Programs. Positions in this class receive general supervision from an assigned supervisor and are distinguished by the assignment of software systems and database support duties that require a working knowledge of a variety of subject matter and software, network and computer functions.  Adequate performance requires the ability to exercise considerable independent judgment in solving problems and providing software, systems, and database support for all systems related to the Student Information System.  Incumbents will provide training for other staff. RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Special Programs 
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot and support the District’s Student Information System (SIS) and related applications.
  • Perform regularly scheduled maintenance of the SIS to ensure the health and accuracy of the data.
  • Provide training and technical support for the SIS and other applications.
  • Oversee the accuracy, timeliness and integrity of data in the District’s SIS.
  • Provide data uploads, downloads, exchanges and reports as required by federal, state, and local government, or by other entities as directed.
  • Work with users and software vendors to troubleshoot database and application problems.
  • Work with other District and site technical staff in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and support of the District’s SIS and other applications.
  • Develop and document procedures related to the SIS and other applications.
  • As required, use the District Help Desk to provide support to District personnel on the use of the SIS and related applications, which requires a general knowledge of all the systems in use at the District.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed work.
  • Operate a wide variety of network and computer peripheral equipment.
  • Install a variety of network or stand-alone software.
  • Instruct other personnel in the use of the SIS and related applications, concepts, reporting, upkeep and related operations.
  • Participates in District inservice programs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of technological advances and industry standards and trends.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Knowledge of:
  • General knowledge of Microsoft and/or Novell Network Systems.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Access and SQL Enterprise databases.
  • Microcomputer hardware and software applications.
  • Reporting procedures, record keeping, and report generation.
  • Basic arithmetic.
  • Current methods, practices, and procedures involving the use of network and computer technology and related equipment.
  • Methods and procedures used in software installation and troubleshooting.
  • Correct English, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and math.
  • District policies, rules and regulations pertaining to assigned area.
Ability to:
  • Operate computers, computer peripherals and standard office equipment.
  • Install software and provide instruction on its use.
  • Learn and effectively use network and systems hardware/software specific to District needs.
  • Read, comprehend, and apply complex instructions and technical literature.
  • Train or assist in providing training to users in the District.
  • Provide technical assistance.
  • Generate and maintain records as they pertain to their duties and assignments.
  • Troubleshoot databases and applications in a highly complex network.
  • Work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions related to complex technical matters.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relations with others.
  • Work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment and under strict deadlines.
  • Make mathematical calculations with accuracy.
  • Work efficiently with frequent interruptions.
  • Schedule and perform work to meet established timelines. 
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Any combination equivalent to: two (2) years of college-level course work in computer technology and three (3) years experience working with computers and software in a network environment.
  • Three (3) years experience using, supporting, or administering the student information system currently in use.
  • Three (3) years demonstrated experience administering an enterprise student information system.
PERSONAL QUALITIES
  • Maturity and good judgment.
  • Electronic aptitude; willingness to learn new procedures; pleasing office personality.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid California driver’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Lift objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Walking throughout a campus to diagnose problems.
  • View information on computer screens and other media.
LICENSE
  • Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator
