JOB SPECIFICATION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT III – SPECIAL ED/HEALTH THE POSITION Under general supervision, assists a certificated teacher in the supervision and instruction of regular or special education students; relieves the teacher of routine clerical duties; assists students with special health care needs; and does related work as assigned. RESPONSIBLE TO:Principal DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Works with students individually and in small groups, assisting with specific instructional or learning tasks. Helps students master assigned subject matter. Assists students by interpreting classroom assignments. Reads to students and listens to students read. Assists pupils with use of audio-visual equipment. Advises students on the use of community services. Administers and scores tests. Takes attendance and lunch counts. Supervises students at lunch, on the playground and on field trips. Applies student management techniques. Provides specialized health care services, as prescribed by a doctor. May be required to perform services for students at various work sites daily. Upon request assists in preparing reports on students’ progress. Assists teacher with contacting parents. Assists in training parent volunteers. Sets up work areas and prepares materials for class use. Prepares charts, flash cards, work sheets, art materials, bulletin boards and similar instructional materials. Orders supplies. Assists in maintaining a neat and orderly environment. May assist with routine clerical duties directly related to classroom work. Maintains routine information and operational records. Keeps anecdotal notes and maintains student files. Prepares reports of work completed and materials used. Operates office machines and devices. Attends and participates in planning and evaluating sessions. Attends in-service workshops for training in best practices which include, but not limited to, Pivotal Assault Response Training (PART-2000), Discreet Trail Training (DTT), Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication of Handicapped Children (TEACCH), and Picture Exchange Communication (PECS). Other related duties may be assigned. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive: •Observes and records behavior patterns and develops appropriate techniques to reinforce acceptable behavior. •Assists students in academic and non-academic subjects as directed. •Monitors administration of student testing and scores tests as directed. •Assists instructional personnel with the development and presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises. •Tutors students individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow up learning activity. •Oversees and supervises students during classroom activities, in the library and on field trips, as well as during lunch and other school day breaks. •Assists in the development of a variety of instructional materials. •Performs a variety of regular clerical duties, such as filing, typing or duplicating materials. •Maintains student record, files, and data collection. •Operates a variety of instructional media, office machines and equipment. •Maintains discipline in the absence of the teacher. •Maintains records of materials and equipment as directed. •Participates in District in-service programs. •Assists students in dressing, eating and toileting. •Provides specialized health care services such as wheelchair positioning, lifting, chest percussion, emergency injections, medications requiring specialized procedures, catheterization, tube feeding, feeding, ostomy care, tracheotomy suctioning and other procedures which are necessary to enable a student to attend school, as prescribed by a physician. QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE Knowledge of: •General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics. •Techniques used in controlling and motivating students. •Correct English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar and math. •Routine record keeping. •General purposes and goals of public education. •Specific subject area content as required in job assignment. Ability to: •Assume responsibility for supervising students. •Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in instructional settings. •Perform routine clerical work and basic arithmetical calculations. •Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children. •Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. •Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public. •Maintain strict confidentiality of student information and school business. •Carryout specified goals of student using best practices. •Provide continuity of structured program. •Aid in transitioning student from one setting to another. •Facilitate communication skills and social skills. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE •Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; some paid or volunteer clerical experience or work with children in an educational or child care setting is desirable; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. •Incumbents are encouraged to participate in courses, seminars and workshops in the area of instructions services, psychology or guidance. REQUIREMENTS •Must possess a First Aide and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate •Pass the District’s adopted Proficiency Examination with a satisfactory score. •If desired, must be proficient in English and a designated second language. •Must maintain a valid California Driver’s License; if required to drive a District vehicle, must be insurable at standard market rates under the District’s insurance policy.
