Position Summary & Essential Duties

The following duties, responsibilities, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's), and physical requirements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed. SUMMARY :

Under general supervision from the departmental chair, the incumbent serves as the clinical dentist as scheduled, cultivates a healthy faculty-student relationship, and engages the students in active learning. The instructor will perform administrative aspects of instruction in a timely manner.

Qualifications (Required and Preferred)

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Must possess a dental degree (DDS or DMD) and have graduated from a dental program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Must have a minimum of 3 years clinical experience.

PREFERENCES :

5 years minimum clinical experience. Graduate from a dental program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Previous teaching experience in the field.

CERTIFICATION OR REQUIRED LICENSING :

Must have or be eligible to have a DDS license in the state of Texas. Must comply with the state of Texas dental and dental hygiene practice act.

  • Application submission must include copies of current State License and CPR Card.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will :

  • Supervision of patient care provided by dental hygiene students and faculty
  • Patient evaluation, as needed, to determine dental health status and recommended dental hygiene treatment
  • Prescribe medications as indicated for dental conditions arising from procedures performed or to be performed in the Temple College Dental Hygiene Clinic
  • Prescribe radiographs according to the Temple College Department of Dental Hygiene Radiographic Guidelines and ADA recommendations
  • Evaluate oral lesions
  • Prescribe sealant placement
  • Administer local anesthetics
  • Recommend patient referrals for medical and dental consultation as indicated
  • Follow infection control protocols
  • Direct emergency procedure in a medical emergency
  • Serve as a resource person to the Clinic Coordinator regarding the emergency kit supplies and emergency equipment
  • Provide documentation of all recommendations, authorizations, prescriptions, referrals, patient care and interaction
  • Cultivate healthy teacher-student relationships.
  • Engage students in active learning.
  • Demonstrates professional written and oral skills in communications with students.
  • Utilize advancements in technology to improve instructional methodology.
  • Incorporates best practices.
  • Seek feedback to improve quality of teaching.
  • Attend conferences, workshops, or programs to enhance professional growth.

  • Possess skills in the use of dental & dental hygiene technologies such as paperless charts and digital radiography

  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT :

    Primarily light physical activity is required with occasional lifting and manipulation of objects up to 25 pounds. Keyboarding and computer use. Use of audio / visual devices.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Work is normally performed in an interior / clinical work environment. Travel to offsite centers may be required. May be exposed to vapors, drugs, and pathogens.

Wages for 16-week semesters are paid evenly over four months, and eight-week semesters are paid evenly over two months, with the first deposit occurring on the last working day of the first full month of the semester. Actual deposits are paid on the last working business day of the month. All benefit deductions are taken at that time.
