Position Summary & Essential Duties

SUMMARY:
Under direct supervision of the Executive Director, Student Success, and STEM Grant Project Director, and Director of Recruitment. The incumbent must be familiar with laws and regulations regarding student information, including FERPA. The incumbent will provide quality academic advisement to students in STEM majors, orientation sessions, admissions, registration, and financial aid conducted by the college. The incumbent also works to recruit students at Temple College, not limited to STEM majors. This position will be based primarily in Temple College’s Taylor Center.

Qualifications (Required and Preferred)

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL AND WORK REQUIREMENTS (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS):

Bachelor's degree and two (2) years directly related full-time work experience or Associate's degree and four (4) years' directly related work experience or six (6) years of equivalent combination of education and experience of which four (4) years must be directly related work experience. Part-time work experience will be pro-rated. The total pro-rated amount must equal the minimum number of years listed.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will:


  • Serve as an active member of the Temple College LEADS and Recruitment Team
  • Recruit participants for STEM majors primarily from economically disadvantage communities
  • Work with ISD administration to encourage advanced math and science course completion.
  • Focus primarily on increasing student enrollment, completion, and success with regional high schools, STEM Cohort students, and undergraduates.
  • Advise undergraduate and STEM Cohort students regarding programs of study, academic plans, career information, guidance activities, educational/degree planning, course selection, and related support services for Temple College programs, with an emphasis on STEM.
  • Review and interpret TSI assessment scores to determine proper course placement.
  • Analyze unofficial transcripts for course equivalencies.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and records of services provided to learners, including registration, add/drop, and withdrawal functions, while adhering to all FERPA guidelines.
  • Provide support services to prospective students, which include traditional and dual credit students.
  • Provide STEM counseling, host STEM workshops (evenings included), and plan lunch and learn sessions for students and families.
  • Assist learners with establishing schedules for completing coursework and transfer planning while balancing course responsibilities/requirements.
  • Collaborate in the activities connected with student orientation, group advising, and recruitment.
  • Recruit STEM students for the LEADS Summer Bridge Program and TAMUCT STEM camps.
  • Participate in TC transfer events and other Temple College activities, including Leopard Preview Day and Open House.
  • Participate in the LEADS Summer Bridge Program and TAMUCT STEM camps.
  • Serve as the primary recruiter for Taylor, Rockdale, Thrall, Thorndale, and Coupland ISDs.
  • Serve as a member of the Temple College Recruitment Taskforce.
  • Maintain hours at Taylor High School to assist students in Temple College’s enrollment advising services.
  • Serve as the liaison for Taylor’s ISD Naomi Passemann Elementary school in Temple College’s Adopt-A-School Program.
  • Guide students in technology, including, but not limited to, accessing TC web services, web registration, and online learning.
  • Assist the department with implementing student planning, providing annual transfer pathway updates, and assembling university transfer documentation.
  • Attend professional development activities and conferences.
  • Source and coordinate diverse speakers in STEM fields.
  • Participate in training to identify mental health problem signals and provide mental health referrals as appropriate.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve divisional, departmental, and institutional goals.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Communicate with faculty regarding student academic challenges.
  • Identify and refer students for tutoring.
  • Develop and implement training materials for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Perform job-related or other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities & Physical Demands

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures such as managing files and documents, word processing, and other office procedures and terms.
  • Knowledge of Temple College admission policies, procedures, eligibility requirements, and academic scheduling.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn the symbiotic relationships between departments to facilitate advising and student success.

SKILLS:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service and orientation skills, seeking continuous process improvement.
  • Communication skills to express information to others effectively. Must have excellent attention to detail.

ABILITIES:

  • Ability to actively listen and understand what clients are communicating.
  • Ability to manage time by organizing, planning, prioritizing, and accomplishing your work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to assess individual academic skills and interpret student advisement testing.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of an administrative nature. It may require lifting or carrying up to 15 pounds. The position requires sitting for long periods. A considerable amount of data entry is required, so keyboard manipulation, typing speed, and accuracy are mandatory.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is normally performed in an office setting, with periodic visits to other service area schools and Temple College Main Campus. Duties will require travel in personal or college-owned vehicles.

WORK SCHEDULE:
8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Thursday with an hour lunch break.
8:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Friday.

Summer Schedule:
7:30 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Thursday with a 30-minute lunch break
This is an on-site position. Essential duties of the role must be performed in-person, during prescribed work hours
