Assistant Accountant (Part Time)
Background
Temple Isaiah, a thriving Reform Jewish congregation in Lexington, Massachusetts, is seeking a part-time Accounting Assistant. The Position
Temple Isaiah seeks a part-time (16-20 hour) Assistant Accountant to work with our finance team and temple staff. Working collaboratively with the Director of Finance and Accounting, the Assistant Accountant will process receivables, process payables, generate and mail member billing statements, communicate with congregants and other staff to resolve issues timely, and other accounting duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Accountant reports to the Director of Finance and Accounting and is responsible for:
· Receivables Processing
o Depositing all incoming cash and checks
o Posting cash, checks, credit card and other electronic payments to member accounts and general ledger
o Engage with ShulCloud and Quickbooks technical support as needed to resolve any issues
o Preparing and posting appropriate receivables-related journal entries
· Payables Processing
o Work with temple staff to secure approvals for invoices
o Generate electronic and manual payments to vendors, including printing checks for signature and mailing
o Posting payables to general ledger
o Preparing and posting appropriate expense-related journal entries
o Engage with vendors to resolve any invoicing issues
· General Finance/Accounting
o Lead the process of the issuing annual 1099 forms to Temple contractors
o Support monthly bank reconciliation of Temple’s bank accounts, ensuring cash transactions are aligned with QuickBooks
o Serving as backup for payroll and purchasing card processing
o Other journal entries for any transaction corrections or to support other ad hoc accounting projects
o Spending analysis as needed
· Communication/Other
o Serve as point of contact for congregants that have questions about billing
o Serve as point of contact for certain vendors as needed
Qualifications
· Experience processing payables
· Experience booking cash and incoming payments
· Experience using QuickBooks
· Experience preparing and processing journal entries
· Strong excel skills
· Strong verbal and written communication ability, particularly with non-accounting staff
· Strong organizational and time management skills
· Adept at problem solving
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
· A commitment to the mission and values of the temple and the Jewish community
Pay and Hours
The role is designed for 16 hours per week, with the possibility of 20 hours during busier periods and with prior approval from Director of Finance and Accounting. The hourly pay would be between $30/hour and $34/hour, commensurate with experience. The evolving needs of the temple may allow for increased hours in the future.
