Job Overview
This is a full time, non-exempt position, reporting to the Director of Facilities. Overall the position is responsible for the cleanliness of the building and grounds areas, including cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining a museum-level quality of polish. The custodial staff member will also monitor on a daily basis the mechanical systems, thermostat systems, and safety and security systems of the building. Additionally, this position works as part of the facilities team in completing event and service setups.
Role duties include but are not limited to:
Cleaning: 75%
- Following the "Custodial Opening and Closing Procedures Checklist," at the start or end of your shift, the custodial staff is responsible for ensuring the building is clean, hygienic, and welcoming. During routine work, note issues with the building and equipment malfunctions to the Facilities Leader and Director of Facilities.
- Will maintain cleanliness in common areas, entryways, hallways, offices, conference rooms, stairwells, gathering spaces, bathrooms, kitchen, building exterior, sacred spaces, and garden/courtyard.
- Empty trash, recycling, and compost receptacles located inside buildings and place in bins/dumpsters.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, urinals, sinks, and fixtures; report restocking needs to Facilities Leader. Clean and polish furniture; clean white boards regularly; dry mop, wet mop, and vacuum floors; dust and spot clean walls and doors in high and low areas; clean and disinfect drinking fountains; clean windows, mirrors, and other glass surfaces including doors/door windows.
- Clean FJECC (Pre-school) and religious school classrooms with special attention to chemical use in spaces with small children.
- Special cleaning attention will be paid to clergy offices, sacred spaces, and lobby area.
- Regular cleaning and disinfection of our professional kitchen used for multiple events each week.
- In the event of building damage, will clean up water/debris with wet pick-up vacuums and assist in moving equipment to accomplish the cleaning task.
- Responds to crisis situations following the Security Plan and takes on the role delegated to facilities as part of the "Crisis Management Team".
EVENT SET-UPS and MAINTENANCE: 25% (dependent on facilities team need)
- Provide event support, cleaning spaces before and after. Possible assistance to facilities staff with setting up and breaking down folding tables and chairs for events. Coordinates with facilities staff and Facilities Leader to manage event details and assist when needed.
- Provides Director of Facilities with a report after each event where damage or loss has occurred.
- Complete the work coordinated by the Facilities Leader on the "Shift Assignment Form" related to set ups, cleaning, disinfecting, exterior grounds, etc.
- Other duties as assigned by Director of Facilities.
REQUIRED: valid driver’s license; ability to lift 50 lbs.; and effective communication skills. Sunday morning availability is mandatory with shifting weekends off. Must be able to read and understand* written directions, safety signage, and other documents; use email and IT equipment utilized by the department; and work independently and as part of a team. PREFERRED: high school diploma or GED and two years’ relevant experience. (*note: non-English-speaking candidates are welcome with the understanding of translating messages with Google Translate)
Working conditions: remaining stationary for extended periods; traversing the Temple’s 110,000 sq ft; moving waste barrels; ascending and descending stairs; utilizing scissor lift, ladders, and other tools needed in cleaning procedures; and wearing personal protective equipment as required by specific assignment.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine cleaning tasks including dusting, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming to ensure all areas are kept clean and tidy.
- Conduct floor care activities such as buffing and polishing to maintain high standards of cleanliness.
- Carry out industrial cleaning tasks in designated areas as required.
- Assist with porter duties, including moving furniture and equipment as necessary.
- Maintain cleanliness in restrooms, break rooms, and common areas by regularly restocking supplies and ensuring proper sanitation.
- Report any maintenance issues or safety hazards to the appropriate personnel promptly.
- Follow established procedures for using cleaning chemicals and equipment safely.
- Participate in special projects such as residential painting or deep cleaning initiatives when needed.
Requirements
- Previous experience in custodial or commercial cleaning roles is preferred but not mandatory.
- Knowledge of floor care techniques, including buffing and industrial cleaning practices.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Good physical stamina; must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks that require standing for extended periods.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
