SUMMARY
The essential duty of a teacher for the deaf and Hard of Hearing is to provide instructional services for students with an auditory impairment, whose age ranges from birth to 21 years. The teacher evaluates students who meet the TEA eligibility requirements to be classified as auditorily impaired. In order to determine the extent of services to be provided, teacher must examine and evaluate the student’s condition by interpreting reports from an Audiologist and Otologist and conduct a Communication Competencies Report. These evaluations identify educational implications such as strategies for intervention, and adaptive equipment or materials needed to assist with the student’s success in the least restrictive environment. In addition, the teacher is a member of the ARD committee and communicates with parents, agencies which serve students with auditory impairments, and school personnel, to coordinate services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Identify the educational intervention need of students with auditory impairments.
- Interpret Audiologist and Otologist reports.
- Conduct and provide a written Language/Communication Competency Assessment within state adopted timelines.
- Determine appropriate learning environment and communicate with staff to accommodate changes
- Direct, unique instruction to include sign language, assistive technology, reading, etc.
- Provide support services that may include transition planning, social integration, job-related experiences, etc.
- Provide strategies and assistance to classroom teachers regarding curriculum and activities of the classroom that, as a direct result of the student’s auditory impairment, require adaptation or reinforcement for the student. Assist in making environmental adjustments in the school.
- Provide in-service training.
- Participates and is knowledgeable in the ARD process.
- Assist with the development of Individual Educational Programs.
- Maintain accurate records to reflect 100% on the PBMAS compliance monitoring document.
- Plans and presents professional development programs for special education staff.
- Assists with planning and presentation of professional development programs for general education personnel as requested.
- Assists in the revision of special education forms and procedures.
- Inform and instruct parents of their child’s hearing needs.
- Network with community agencies to assist with student’s needs so they can be successful within the community.
- Collaborate services with Early Child Intervention, DARS Division for the Deaf, Texas State School for the Deaf, and Region XII Educational Service Center.
- Oversees Coordination of Services for the Temple Regional Day School Program, including budget and staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor/Superintendent.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in supervision of Regional Day School personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree, Proficiency in signing; Certified to teach in Texas with a Deaf/Hard of Hearing or Dead Certification; Master’s degree preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must be able to effectively communicate orally, in writing, or signing to a variety of audiences including conferences with parents, community service providers, district staff, chairing committee meetings, preparing written student evaluations, preparing written reports regarding program implementation/recommendations, preparing policies and procedures, and conducting staff development activities.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
- Ability to perform basic math
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, and percentages.
REASONING ABILITIES
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
