SUMMARY
The Controller will play a pivotal role in overseeing the financial operations of the organization. They will be responsible for managing the accounting department, ensuring accurate financial reporting, implementing and maintaining internal controls, and providing strategic financial guidance to support our growth and mission.
The position oversees the accounting department and plays a critical role in the strategic financial planning activities of the organization. The position reports to the CFO, and serves as a member of TNDC’s leadership team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Financial Management:
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to accounting principles and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop financial strategies, long-term financial plans, and annual budgets.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and maintain financial models, reports, and metrics to evaluate and communicate financial performance to management, investors, and other stakeholders.
- Monitor and manage cash flow, working capital, and liquidity to optimize financial resources and support operational needs.
Accounting Operations:
- Lead and manage the accounting team, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of all accounting functions, including rent collection, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, and fixed assets.
- Implement and maintain effective internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard assets, mitigate financial risks, and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
- Oversee the month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Collaborate and work closely with external auditors to ensure that annual financial audits and tax compliance activities are completed timely.
Compliance and Reporting:
- Supervises and participates in the timely submission of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and contractual obligations related to affordable housing programs, tax credits, subsidies, and financing agreements.
- Stay updated on changes in accounting standards and regulations impacting the affordable housing industry and implement necessary adjustments to financial reporting and practices.
Supervision and Leadership
- Serves as a member of TNDC’s senior leadership team and staff representative to the Board Finance Committee.
- Participates on other organization-wide or cross-departmental teams.
- Provides technical assistance to other departments around cost benefit analysis, cost accounting and lender compliance.
- Administers, plans, directs, supervises, and evaluates the activities of department staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work at a desk in a stationary (standing and/or seated) position for most of the workday.
- Ability to work on a computer that requires the constant use of hands fingers and wrists for most of the workday.
- Ability to lift or move objects weighing less than or equal to 25 pounds without assistance.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Certified Public Accountant
- BA in Accounting or Finance.
- In-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, plan and implement change in accounting operations, increasing efficiency and internal controls.
- At least ten years of experience in finance and administrative functions including not-for-profit experience.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with affordable housing accounting practices, tax credits, and subsidy programs
- Advanced knowledge of Yardi accounting software.
- Partnership management experience.
