Tenmile Farm Foundation is seeking a field production lead to manage a 100-acre vegetable and fruit farm in Dover Plains, New York. Tenmile is dedicated to alleviating hunger by producing nutritious vegetables, fruits and proteins for distribution to food insecure New Yorkers. Through its partnerships with emergency food programs, Tenmile Farm is committed to ensuring that New Yorkers seeking emergency food are served with dignity and have equitable access to nutritious, locally grown food.
This position offers the successful candidate a unique opportunity to work on a state-of-the-art farm and have a significant impact addressing food insecurity in NYC and the Hudson Valley.
- Work with farm manager to implement, manage and participate in all aspects of our produce operation: seeding; greenhouse management; cultivation and field prep; transplanting; weed and pest management; harvesting, washing, and marketing crops
- Create field crew schedules; monitor and be accountable for the progress of all field work
- Use mechanized farm equipment for tillage, cultivation, and harvest

- Participate in regular field work with the crew, including seeding, transplanting, cultivating and hand weeding, hoop house work, harvest, post-harvest washing and packing, and other field projects
- Train and work alongside the farm crew as needed to ensure timely completion of daily tasks
- Ensure accurate farm record-keeping, including harvest records, sales, and farm expenses
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
- Willing to perform other duties as needed and work cooperatively with members of the farm team
- A minimum of 2 years of experience farming for commercial markets on 10 acres or more
- Experience managing work schedules; experience training staff
- Demonstrated knowledge of “best” farming practices including crop rotation, cover cropping, composting, IPM, and soil fertility management
- Ability to safely operate tractors and other farm equipment
- Experience with mechanical planting and harvesting
- Comfortable working with databases or farm-planning software
- Ability to lead, work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and capacity to adapt to operational challenges
- Valid driver’s license
- Experience in season extension practices
- Experience with greenhouse operations
- Tractor and farm equipment operation and maintenance
- Demonstrated ability to stay informed of current research and/or new methods in production agriculture and soil health and best agricultural practices.
