What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corrections Officer position at Tennessee Department of Correction?
Riverbend Maximum Security Institution (RMSI) opened in 1989 and replaced its 100-year-old neighbor, the Tennessee State Penitentiary. Even today, it's billed as one of the state's most high-tech prisons. RMSI, which is made up of 20 different buildings with approximately 320,000 square feet of operating space, sits on 132 acres located off Cockrill Bend Boulevard. Riverbend's designated capacity is 748 offenders. Of that number, 480 are classified as high risk.
Riverbend houses all of the state's male death row offenders. The overall mission of the prison is to house and manage high-risk male offenders to ensure the safety of the public, departmental employees, and offenders while providing rehabilitative programs.
Education programs at the prison include GED and Adult Basic Education. There are also vocational classes available for printing, commercial cleaning, residential construction, cabinet making/millwork and computer information systems. Offenders not involved in academic vocation are required to work in support service roles throughout the prison.
Correctional Officer
SALARY: The entry level salary is $44,520 annually. Equipment and uniforms will be furnished. One meal will be furnished for each shift worked.
Necessary Special Qualifications for Correctional Officer:
Applicants for this class must:
1. be willing to and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons
2. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of application
3. Be a citizen of the United States
4. Have a good moral character, as determined by investigation
5. Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority
6. Agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority
7. Supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint based criminal history records check
8. Have no conviction for a felony or have been discharged under any other than honorable conditions from any branch of the United States armed forces
9. Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position
10. Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position
11. Submit to and pass a pre-employment screening test for use of illegal drugs
12. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment in some positions.
13. Upon appointment, successfully complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy.
During their careers, most correctional security employees can expect to be assigned to any one of three different work shifts and any number of different post assignments. While employee work preferences are considered, there is no guarantee that the employee will remain assigned to any specific shift and/or post assignment.

Job Overview
Summary:
Under general supervision, is responsible for correctional work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.
Distinguishing Features:
This is the entry working class in the Correctional Officer sub-series. An employee in this class performs correctional work at a state penal institution involving the custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates, and may be assigned to work any shift. This class differs from that of Correctional Corporal in that an incumbent of the latter acts as a minor supervisor.
Work Activities:
1. Supervises inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas, and attends to the medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of the inmates.
2. Inspects and patrols the grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.
3. Checks in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
4. Observes inmate behavior; counsels with inmates and family about problems; evaluates inmates on room and personal hygiene, attitudes towards employees and other inmates, and sends this evaluation to the counseling department.
5. Attends a variety of meetings such as staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
6. Prepares a variety of reports such as daily logs, disciplinary reports, records of inmates' jobs and pay, daily inmate counts, and requisitions for office supplies.
7. Operates and utilizes a variety of equipment including two-way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and may operate motor vehicles.
8. Ensures the safety of residents through the supervision of their daily activity.
9. Breaks up fights or other potentially dangerous situations by persuasion or the use of physical force.
10. Carries out and explains existing policies and procedures to others.

*Leave earned in excess of the maximum allowable days will be transferred to the employee's sick leave account annually on the employee's anniversary hire date.
· Sick Leave
All full-time employees accrue 1 day (7.5 hours) of sick leave per month, provided they work the major portion of that month.
· Bereavement Leave
Leave with pay is granted for three days in the event of the death of an employee's spouse, child, stepchild, grandchild, parents, grandparents, siblings, stepparents, foster parents, or parents-in-law without charge to the employee's leave time. Two additional days of sick leave may be granted to provide a total of five days absence for this purpose.
· Family Medical Leave
Allows up to twelve work weeks of leave* each year to eligible employees for certain family and medical reasons. Continued health insurance coverage is provided during the leave period, and the employee is reinstated to the same or an equivalent position once the leave period has ended.
*Leave may or may not be paid leave, depending on individual employee's leave balances for earned leave.
· Parental Leave
Parental leave is an absence from work granted any employee who has been employed in state service for at least 12 consecutive months as a full-time employee. Parental leave is a combination of sick, annual, or special leave without pay for a period not to exceed four months following the birth of a child.
· Military Leave
Granted in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
· Holidays
Each year, full-time state employees receive 11 holidaysoff with pay.
· Retirement
State employees are automatically members of the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System. (TCRS) Employees must accrue 5 years of creditable state service to be vested (guaranteed retirement benefits when age requirements are met). Vested members of TCRS become eligible for service retirement upon completion of 30 years of creditable service or upon attainment of age 60.
· Deferred Compensation
Employees may choose to make pre-tax contributions to a variety of investment options through the 401(k) plan or the 457 plan. A minimum $20 monthly contribution is required to participate in the plans. For the 401(k) plan, the state will match the $50 per month minimum contribution. The $50 match policy is evaluated on an annual basis.
· Flexible Benefits Plan
Under this program certain specific expenses (e.g., medical and dental insurance premiums, medical expenses, dependent day care expenses) can be deducted from an employee's paycheck prior to taxes, resulting in a lower taxable income level.
· Higher Education Fee Discounts and Waivers
A 25% discount on undergraduate tuition at any state operated institution of higher learning in Tennessee is available to children 23 years of age or under of full time state employees. In addition, full-time state employees with six months of continuous service are eligible to have tuition fees waived for one course per semester at a state institution.
