Ensures that operational activities comply with federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations designed to protect students, faculty, staff, and visitors from physical and environmental hazards. Through risk management techniques (i.e., aversion to fines and lawsuits), this position seeks to allow for the more efficient use of institutional resources which enhances the institutions academic experience and competitiveness.

Essential Functions
In conjunction with other staff, implement, coordinate and update a wide range of safety and environmental programs, policies and procedures, including general occupational and laboratory safety, hazardous materials, hazardous waste management and disposal, industrial hygiene, chemical safety and biological safety and emergency management. Ongoing development and maintenance of a campus emergency management program. Supervise and direct the fulfillment of the regulatory requirements for building safety technologies of the university including elevators, emergency generator systems, and other life safety systems as required. Assist with fire safety, construction and maintenance safety, building safety, emergency planning and response, fire drills and fire alarm response. Monitor program effectiveness; recommend changes required for program improvement. Perform Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) audits and inspections. Develop and present training for faculty and staff. Monitor and communicate regulatory requirements impacting institutional operations, goals and objectives. Perform safety and environmental compliance inspections of university laboratories and work areas, and follow-up activities and assure correction of deficiencies. Interface with administrators, faculty, staff, contractors, and external agencies to promote compliance with policies, laws, regulations and standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in environmental health, occupational safety, science, engineering or a related discipline. 40 Hour HAZWOPER Technician training or ability to obtain in one year. At least four years of related professional experience with two years’ experience managing occupational safety, environmental and safety compliance auditing, and/ or risk management programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional certification in a related field, e.g. Certified Safety Professional (CSP),
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), OSHA 30 hr., etc. Four years’ experience managing hazardous waste, occupational safety, environmental and safety compliance auditing, and/ or risk management programs. Previous experience managing environmental health and safety programs in a higher education institution.
Work Hours
Typical hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Additional hours if/when needed.
Compensation And Benefits
Salary Commensurate with education and experience. Pay grade 12. Benefits Information
The University offers a competitive benefits package. Benefits include the accumulation of two vacation days per month and one sick leave day per month, and thirteen University holidays. Other benefits include medical and life insurance (shared cost with the university), retirement, optional 401k, and educational benefits.
