The primary function of this position will be to serve as the University Radiation Safety Officer. Responsible for developing, implementing and managing all aspects of the University Radiation Safety Program and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations and standards and to ensure the safety of users of radioactive materials, x-ray producing devices, Class 3B and 4 lasers and additional non-ionizing radiation devices. Accountable for applicable Radioactive Materials License/s issued from Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation (TDEC) as authorized by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Technical expert on campus for radiological research projects and develop and lead the University Radiation Safety Committee. Works under the supervision of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). This position will interact on a consistent basis with: Director of EHS, faculty, staff, students, various levels of management. This position will typically advise and counsel: faculty, staff and students. In conjunction with other EHS staff, manage, develop, implement, coordinate, update and audit other environmental health and safety programs, policies and procedures as assigned. This position ensures operational activities comply with federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations designed to protect students, faculty, staff, and visitors from physical and environmental hazards. Through risk management techniques (i.e. aversion to fines and lawsuits), this position seeks to allow for the more efficient use of institutional resources which enhances the institutions academic experience and competitiveness.

Essential Functions

Develop, implement and manage a university-wide radiation safety program and laser safety program. Manages and oversees effective implementation of applicable materials license/s in accordance with regulations and approved license conditions. Including accurate completion and filing of reports and documentation required by regulatory agencies. Develops, approves, reviews, and implements radiation safety program policies and procedures for the safe use of radioactive materials, ionizing/non-ionizing radiation, and radiation-producing machines and equipment at the university. Perform radioactive material contamination surveys, dose rate surveys, lab closeout surveys. Review and assess all documentation. Manage the radioactive waste handling program including decay in storage and offsite shipping. Manage the university dosimetry program, review reports, initiate and conduct investigations as necessary. Respond to radiological incidents and accidents, mitigate hazards and provide decontamination services. Provide detailed written reports to determine root causes, appropriate corrective actions and correspondence with regulatory authorities. Define radiation safety requirements to ensure occupational exposures fall within ALARA policy and to ensure public dose limits are not exceeded. Provide radiological safety and health consultation to faculty, staff, and students across the university. Develop and provide new safety programs to meet the dynamic research needs of the university. Perform/manage other EHS duties/programs as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, public health, environmental health or other relevant science related field. Five (5) years of progressive work experience in radiation safety with at least two (2) years in regulatory designation of radiation safety officer for research and use of radioactive materials.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or other relevant science related field strongly preferred. Training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials or radioactive materials.

Work Hours

Typical hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Additional hours if/when needed.

Compensation And Benefits

Salary Commensurate with education and experience. Pay Grade 12. Benefits Information

The University offers a competitive benefits package. Benefits include the accumulation of two vacation days per month and one sick leave day per month, and thirteen University holidays. Other benefits include medical and life insurance (shared cost with the university), retirement, optional 401k, and educational benefits.
