Executive Director in Training – Teran James Young Foundation
Location: Maui, HI
Position: Full-time, starting as Executive Assistant
Are you passionate about peace, sustainability, and community transformation? The Teran James Young Foundation is seeking a dedicated and dynamic individual to join our team as an Executive Director in Training. This role will begin as an Executive Assistant, offering hands-on experience in nonprofit leadership, with the goal of transitioning into the Executive Director position.
About Us:
The Teran James Young Foundation is a nonprofit committed to fostering peace and sustainability through education, community initiatives, and direct action. Our programs focus on nonviolent communication, restorative practices, trauma-informed care, sustainability projects, climate action, sustainable tourism, and youth empowerment. We also operate a youth shelter, lead the Maui Community Energy Alliance Co-op, and are developing a houseless managed eco-village with sustainable agriculture and wetland regeneration.
Key Responsibilities:
As Executive Assistant, you will:
- Provide direct support to the current Executive Director
- Assist with strategic planning, grants and fundraising
- Coordinate programs, events (e.g., Peace Day Rally), and community initiatives
- Oversee administrative functions, personnel and communications
- Engage with stakeholders, partners, and government agencies
- Teach nonviolent communication, restorative justice and trauma informed care and more.
- Learn to mediate and join our mediation staff.
- Research and write up proposed policy and legislative suggestions for social change
- Participate in creating a peaceful and sustainable world including visioning on how we do that.
- Learn and grow into the Executive Director role
What We’re Looking For:
- Passion for peace, sustainability, and social change
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
- Experience with nonviolent communication and restorative justice.
- Knowledge or experience with running a youth shelter,
- Teaching in the community and in schools and facilitating community meetings.
- Experience in nonprofit management and program coordination.
- Ability to learn quickly and take initiative
- Commitment to growing into the Executive Director role
