Position Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Human Resources and Payroll Officer to join the team at our family-owned manufacturing and construction company. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing all aspects of human resources and payroll for 80 employees across 4 locations in northern Ohio. This position plays a key role in fostering a positive work environment and ensuring compliance with employment regulations.
Responsibilities overview:
Human Resources
- Recruitment - job descriptions, postings, interviews, screening, on-boarding.
- Workforce Development - employee appreciation programs, training grants, performance evaluations, termination processing and exit interviews.
- Employment Compliance - safety programs (OSHA, BWC, DFWP, FMCSA), employee handbook, conflict resolution, records management, correspondence, new hire reporting, unemployment, EEO Certification.
- Benefits Management - Medical insurance, HSA, dental, vision, life, 401k, paid time off.
- Employee Engagement - actively engage with employees.
Payroll
- Process payroll from manual timecards, electronic time records, and salaried employee time using both Foundation Construction Accounting software and Peachtree Accounting Software.
- Timecard and paycheck distribution.
- Payables related to payroll including payroll taxes, benefits, deductions, and garnishments.
- Recordkeeping and reporting such as payroll tax filings, I-9, W2's.
- Prevailing wage coordination - fringe reduction calculations, employee notifications, certified payroll reports.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field is preferred. Associate's degree is required.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in HR and payroll processing, preferably in a similar role.
Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of HR practices, benefits administration, and labor laws.
- In-depth knowledge of payroll processes, systems, and federal/state regulations.
Skills:
- Proficient in bookkeeping software. Experience with Foundation Construction Accounting and Peachtree Accounting are a plus, but not required.
- Proficient with Microsoft 365 Outlook, Word, and Excel, including use of PivotTables.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
- Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Prompt, dependable, honest, and able to maintain confidentiality.
Setting:
The primary setting will be our Lorain office. The building was expanded and completely renovated in 2022. There are 4 people that work in the office, including two of the three owners. Each person has their own private office, computer, printer, and physical files. Electronic files are stored in our on-site server. We have a brand-new multifunction printer/copiers/scanner with finisher. Our office features a full kitchen and conference room. We all collaborate throughout the day. Working hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30am to 4:00pm with half-hour lunch break. The office is closed on weekends.
The Lorain location has other buildings for the manufacturing, mechanics, and construction workers. There are a total of about 40 employees in Lorain.
We have a company vehicle that stays on premises for shared use. Travel to our Huron, Sandusky, and Bellevue locations will be required. There are about 35 employees working across these locations.

Our construction division specializes in both municipal and private roadway projects. Our dock division operates two facilities on the Black River in Lorain that receive material from lake freighters.

Pay: $25.00 - $27.00 per hour
