Veterinary Assistant - Part-time or Full-time
Potential shifts fall between 7am and 7pm Monday through Friday
Flexibility for future weekend shifts preferred
The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for assisting the medical staff with procedures as well as handling a wide variety of medical functions independently. They interact frequently with clients and will be responsible for communicating medical, prescription, and billing information. A large part of their job will also be related to routine processes to ensure a clean, well-stocked and safe environment for staff and animals.
· Job Duties:
· Clinical skills will include (taking vitals, restraining animals, clipping nails, clipping surgery sites, wrapping wounds or catheter sites, etc.)
· Collection, submission, interpretation and logging of diagnostic samples: blood, urine, feces, and skin
· Ability to take on more clinical skills over time such as: blood draws, IV catheters, x-rays, and surgery assisting.
· Administration of oral, SQ, IM and IV medications
· Participation and oversight in surgery and procedures requiring anesthesia
· Perform dental cleanings under clinician supervision
· Interact skillfully with clients, providing service and education
· Participate in general care of hospitalized patients
· Daily cleaning and maintenance chores as defined by the Lead RVT
· Maintenance of equipment, supplies, and facility
· Review patient records to ensure accurate reminders are in place
· Take personal responsibility for cleanliness and appeal in parking lots, entry ways, wood chip, trash, plantings, etc. to ensure excellent client impressions of the business
· Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
· Experience with animals (preferably in a volunteer or working environment)
· Comfort level with handling a wide variety of cats and dogs in different situations
· Proven communication skills (written and verbal) to interact effectively with clients, colleagues and vendors.
· Proven ability to adhere to protocols consistently
· Proficient in computer skills to use database, email and other programs specific to the hospital.
· Team player willing to receive feedback and mentor newer employees
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that MUST be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing duties of this job, employees may be regularly required to lift and or move up to forty pounds as well as bend, squat or stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to safely handle a variety of animals including large breed dogs.
