Primary Function:Insure that all incoming and impounded animals receive proper evaluation, medications, vaccinations and classification.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Insure all animals receive vaccinations, testing and medications in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Maintain inventory of vaccinations, medications, surgery equipment and microchips.
  • Order necessary medical supplies in a cost effective manner.
  • Makes recommendation for euthanasia. Can perform euthanasia.
  • Maintain surgery schedule and post-op paperwork and data entry.
  • Communicates with veterinarians and assists with surgeries.
  • Reports any problems with the animals or THHS surgery facility.
  • Maintain medical records and information for shelter animals, including but not limited to spay/neuters; any injections including rabies; microchip numbers; health certificates.
  • Politely assists the public and volunteers with information regarding animals or the facility.
  • Cleans and disinfects the surgery area and adjoining kennel area.
  • Assists in other work areas in shelter as needed.
  • Maintain medical records and information for shelter animals, including but not limited to spay/neuters; any injections including rabies; microchip numbers; health certificates.
  • Work within budget.
  • Demonstrate ability to coordinate daily work with volunteers.
  • Must be available to work any day of the week on a possible rotating schedule.
  • Provide daily Quality of Life to animals by interacting with them as time permits and walking at least one dog per day.
  • Any other duties as specified by supervisor.
  • Daily Kennel inspection of all animal areas noting any of the following symptoms: Unusual fecal results, vomiting or failure to eat or drink. Lethargy; any unusual discharges, sores or hair loss. Unusual behavior issues. Implement necessary precautions or medical instructions so as to treat or contain the symptoms/problem.
  • Prior to leaving each day walk through all kennel areas in the building. Verify that each animal has been properly medicated for the day and medicine sheets were initialed for that day.
  • Education/Experience

Certified in Indiana as a Registered Veterinary Technician is preferred . Two years experience in animal handling skills, animal behavior or care. Strong knowledge of animal health issues and treatment of same.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of supervisory principles.
  • Ability to Utilize and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information to coworkers and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Knowledge of animal boarding/grooming/handling processes used in rescue shelters and boarding facilities.
  • Knowledge of common animal diseases, animal first aid and able to identify signs of animal illness or injury.
  • Ability to identify animal species, breeds, ages and sexes.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Valid Driver’s License or State Id required
  • Legal United States Citizen

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those needed to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to stand, walk, use hands to finger, touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; speak and hear. The employee on occasion may be required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision requirements include close, distance and peripheral vision.

Work EnvironmentWhile performing daily duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to high noise levels, noxious odors, fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and potentially volatile situations that can present risk of violence or injury. Employee must be able to identify workplace hazards that if not handled appropriately could cause injury. Employee must take necessary precautions and or safety measures to respond to and prevent hazards and/or injury.
