As Tesla continues to vertically integrate our operations, Tesla's Cell Facilities team is looking for a highly motivated Sr. Controls Engineer to work on a critical challenge facing the world's energy transition to sustainable energy. Sustaining, operating, and optimizing a first-of-a-kind Battery Facility.
As a Sr. Controls Engineer, you will work closely with the design team, construction & commissioning team supporting projects from concept through design, installation, integration, ramp up, and long-term operations, sustainability & operations.

As a Sr. Controls Engineer, you will work closely with the design team, construction & commissioning team supporting projects from concept through design, installation, integration, ramp up, and long-term operations, sustainability & operations.
Responsibilities
- Lead the control system architecture design including the integration of HMI, SCADA, PLC, VFDs, safety PLCs, and 3rd party packaged equipment
- Lead the development of greenfield PLC code with an emphasis on generating code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable and reusable. PLC code will interact with subsystems such as packaged equipment, life-critical safety systems, VFDs, starters, valves, PID Controllers, HVAC, and 3rd party equipment
- Design, develop and optimize human machine interfaces, SCADA systems and MES interfaces
- Lead the implementation and validation of code for safety rated controls (SIL/PL)
- Work closely with the process design teams to develop process control narratives and process and instrumentation diagrams to ensure that process systems will operate safely and reliably
- Develop plant-wide supervisory systems to minimize unplanned downtime and centralize plant performance monitoring
- Responsible for implementing and managing continuous process optimization including the addition of advanced and conventional technologies to improve quality, productivity and reduce overall waste
- Available to travel for FAT and equipment installation and commissioning
Requirements
- 4 years as a control systems engineer working with Siemens PLC and Ignition SCADA systems
- Additional experience working with additional PLC platforms: Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, Omron
- Experience working with modern communication protocols: Profinet, EtherCAT, Ethernet IP, Modbus TCP
- Evidence of exceptional ability, including a strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability to leverage this understanding to solve challenging technical problems
- Demonstrated experience in the execution of controls projects from concept development through commissioning and ramp-up
- Demonstrated experience supporting a running production facility
- Experience participating in process hazard reviews and HazOps
- Experience with safety rated systems
