The Cell Manufacturing Engineering team at Tesla is looking for a highly-motivated Manufacturing Engineer to contribute to the development and ramp of cell manufacturing equipment and processes for our cutting-edge Tesla Energy Batteries. The Battery is one of the most complex and challenging components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla's world class manufacturing facilities. Responsibilities
- Own/Lead development of new/innovative manufacturing processes from proof of concept through to full scale production that enable improved battery performance and/or cost
- Drive ramp of new production lines by characterizing baseline performance and capability of each system and drive actions to maintain or improve performance as measured by product quality and tool availability
- Lead product design for manufacturability (DFM), DFMEA Develop and manage PFMEA, DFMEA risk assessments to prioritize process improvement projects and ensure adequate metrology and controls are in place
- Drive root cause analysis through process and equipment expertise, derive & execute DOE's accordingly, characterize boundary conditions and optimize process for manufacturability and quality
- Work independently and with vendors to build Proof of principle tooling/fixturing for dev , root cause of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement and validate equipment modifications
- Analyze production with statistical software (JMP or Minitab preferred) to understand manufacturing uptime, availability, and reliability metrics-yield, OEE, cycle time, quality and investigate bottlenecks to identify root cause and countermeasure to maximize throughput
- Troubleshoot and recover processes by PLC, HMI, or tool management software, and implement changes/improvements
- Ensure manufacturing lines meet uptime, availability and reliability metrics - OEE, cycle time, quality and first time through
- Generate and maintain documentation including machine and process specifications, drawings, BOM, spare parts, PFMEA, control plan, process flow chart
Requirements
- Degree or relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent.
- 5 or more years of experience in a production environment and/or proven manufacturing development track record. Experience with high speed, high volume automated manufacturing equipment (Cell Assembly, Part feeding ,packaging, Leak testing etc) a plus
- Extensive Proficiency with 3D (SolidWorks, 3Dx, Catia) and 2D CAD (AutoCAD) platforms
- Proficiency in Python, SQL and data visualization (i.e. Tableau, Grafana, Power BI)
- Expertise in Statistical Process Control (SPC) and process capability
- A passion to implement and work on ramping a manufacturing line including experience with mechanical automation equipment, robots, design of electromechanical systems, PLCs, motion controls
- Experience with vision hardware/software
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, occasionally requiring extended hours
- Proven ability to operate under pressure while managing multiple priorities simultaneously
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
