What are the responsibilities and job description for the Materials Test Technician position at Tesla?
The candidate will work as a member of Tesla's Materials Test Group to support material level testing and validation activities. The role includes overseeing a wide variety of tests and associated test equipment, ranging from simple scratch testing devices to large mechanical test equipment and environmental chambers. The position will be based in Fremont (California, USA) within the Materials Test Lab.
- Perform a wide variety of tests on a broad spectrum of materials. Test competence should be exhibited in any of the following aspects:
- Mechanical Test: tension, compression, shear, hardness, peel, fatigue, high strain rate testing, etc.
- Environmental and Weathering: corrosion, UV-weathering, thermal, humidity, chemical compatibility testing, thermal shock, etc.
- Characterization: SEM-EDS, XRF, DSC, OES, TGA, FTIR, rheometry, optical microscopy, profilometry, confocal microscopy, thermal conductivity, etc.
- Conduct testing in an extremely fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Interface with a broad spectrum of internal customers to coordinate sample preparation, test updates and observations.
- Independently complete materials tests and issue reports for approval. Create and manage "Test Incident Reports" documentation to facilitate and track corrective actions.
- Management of laboratory assets, ensuring all equipment is maintained, calibrated, and serviced.
- Develop, author, and ensure conformance to laboratory standard operating procedures.
- Support engineering staff in the root cause analysis of test failures and development of new test methods.
- Support management in the procurement, purchase, and installation of new equipment
- Practical knowledge and working experience within a materials test lab or similar, including basic understanding of different type of materials.
- Experience operating and maintaining test equipment and/or environmental chambers is preferred. Experience working with hand tools, sample preparation equipment and CAD software is a plus.
- Familiarity with materials-centric test standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO, SAE).
- Experience working with hazardous materials, with a willingness to exhibit and promote health and safety across the team.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish effective working relationships.
- An ability to effectively handle multiple priorities, meet deadlines and manage time independently; must maintain top level professional integrity and appearance throughout.
- Knowledge, understanding and a track record of conformance to ISO 17025 is advantageous.
