What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Design Engineering Manager position at Tesla?
Tesla's Infrastructure Engineering team is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineering Manager to play a pivotal role in building our Texas Gigafactory. The manager will work intimately with the team to manage high visibility / value projects and will apply technical / leadership skills to assure the timely and efficient execution of the projects.
Responsibilities
Lead design concept / development efforts, working directly with engineers to vet / validate multiple different proposed solutions
Define engineering workflows and plans for the team
Finalize design scope from initial concepts and budgets, define initial assumptions
Partner with the project management team to identify and document all project design milestones and deliverables
Continuously monitor and measure all project design processes and activities to identify and communicate potential issues, risks, and problems and provide corrective action options to drive to resolution
Serve as a final reviewer for all designs, ensuring simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and functionality / robustness
Subject Matter Expert in the preparation of mechanical construction drawings and engineering specifications
Requirements
Professional Engineer (PE) registration is required
12 years of design experience in HVAC, chilled and heating water systems, and steam systems within a fast-paced, dynamic environment, or other demonstrated evidence of exceptional ability
Minimum 3 years of experience managing engineering teams and executing large-scale, complex projects
Extensive design experience with the following equipment types : Open and / or closed-circuit cooling towers; Water and air-cooled chillers; Gas-fired and electric water boilers; Large air handling units with heating / cooling coils and / or gas-fired heaters; Packaged air-to-air and water-to-water heat pumps; Dust collectors, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, fans, and pumps
Knowledge and experience with writing sequences of operation (SOO)
Deep knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, practices, and processes, including expertise in design-build approaches and permitting considerations
Hands-on experience in infrastructure planning, design, and program management, with a strong track record of cross-disciplinary collaboration (e.g., process safety, electrical, and fire protection engineering)
