  • Education and Experience
  • Graduate from high school or equivalent is required. Must possess current Texas EMT-B or EMT-I, certification in good standings with the Texas DSHS. Required to obtain EMT-P certification / licensure from Texas DSHS within designated time period.

    • Environmental / Working Conditions
    • Emergency Medical Services provides crew quarters which are well lighted and ventilated. This position is subject to adverse weather and working conditions. The EMT is frequently exposed to blood, and other infectious agents. Occasionally work involves the EMT to be outdoors, in confined spaces, heights, underground, wet, and dry environment with a wide range of temperatures. Frequently work involves a noisy environment, and unusual lighting.

    • Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
    • The EMT must respond in a helpful and considerate manner to the needs of patients, family members, other health care providers, public safety and law enforcement personnel, EMS students, volunteers, and fellow employees.

    • Job Description
    • Essential Job Functions : Serves as crew member on an EMS unit; responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; evaluates scenes and responds to conditions as per policies and protocols; assesses patient and provides medical care on the scene and en route to the hospital; operates response vehicles in emergency and non-emergency traffic modes; delivers patients to hospitals; documents activities, including patient care, via written and electronic media; maintains EMS vehicles and equipment; performs routine maintenance and cleaning at EMS facilities; instructs first responders and the public on emergency care, including CPR; attends continuing education for classes for updates on medical procedures; The EMT is assigned to a shift and not a station and will be expected to work a combination of hours including 8, 10, 12, or 24 hours. The EMT shall be trained in dispatch and may be used to cover shifts. Other Job Functions : Performs other duties as required

    • Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations
    • Certification or license by the Texas DSHS as an Emergency Medical Technician and by the American Heart Association as a Basic Life Support Provider are required. Class C driving permit by the Texas Department of Public Safety with no driving while intoxicated (DWI) convictions or any other factors, which would preclude insurability, is required.

    • Physical Capabilities
    • Frequently exerts a medium amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull and move patients or objects. Frequently work involves standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching and kneeling. Occasionally work involves sitting, running, climbing stairs, climbing ladders and crawling.

    • Skills and Abilities
    • High degree of knowledge and skill in pre-hospital patient care is essential. Must demonstrate effective verbal communication and writing skills. Practical knowledge of medicolegal aspects of pre-hospital patient care is essential. Comprehensive geographical knowledge of Lubbock County with particular emphasis on the cities of Lubbock and, utilizing available maps, the cities of Abernathy, Idalou, Slaton, Wolfforth, and Shallowater is essential.
