What are the responsibilities and job description for the OST School Age Leader position at Test Providence YMCA?
Position Summary
This is a position that may work approximately 20 - 25 hours per week.
We are looking for energetic individuals who want to make a difference in young peoples' lives through our After School programming! Come engage with our participants, and help them enrich their lives through activities such as active play, homework assistance, creative arts, STEM, and much more! Being open minded and having a willingness to be silly with our participants is a must for our After School counselor positions! We work with students in kindergarten through 5th grade, and have After School locations in 7 school-based sites throughout Providence. The typical shift is Monday-Friday, 2pm-6pm, with additional morning and evening hours available.
Essential Duties:
- Provide leadership and demonstrate the ability to set and maintain limits for children using positive reinforcement
- Provide input and implementation toward the development of a well-rounded academically aligned curriculum
- Assist Site Director/Coordinator in planning and carrying out activities during school vacation weeks, half days, and other days off from school
- Provide supervision to children at all times, on-site or off-site.
- Arrive on time and ready to engage with staff, students, and parents with no distractions providing visual surveillance of program participants
- Assist the Site Director/Coordinator in maintaining records involving attendance, sign/in-sign/out sheets, and program supplies
- Maintain good public relations with parents and school personnel and understand that you represent the YMCA and maintain a positive disposition, demeanor and attire
- Attempt to answer parents’ concerns and make appropriate referrals to Site Director/Coordinator
- Demonstrate flexibility in scheduling for special events and be available to work at other sites when needed
- Report accidents and injuries and complete incident reports immediately and turn into appropriate personnel.
- Work in harmony and cooperation with the staff, community partners, school personnel, participant families and members of the YMCA.
- Treat all children with dignity and respect
Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older and a High school diploma or GED and formal training in childcare.
- Exhibit warm and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate well with children, and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with program goals.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to anticipate, identify and solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Certifications / Training: (not all are required to apply)
Before 1st day with children:
• Child Abuse Prevention
• Meet RI DCYF or MA OCCS requirement
Within 90 days of employment:
• CPR/ First Aid Certification
Must be willing to attend meetings, training and certifications to improve knowledge and program quality.
