POSITION SUMMARY
The Principal Transmission Line Engineer serves as the subject matter expert for all technical aspects of transmission line design, construction, and operation. This role is responsible for providing advanced engineering expertise, directing transmission line design contractors, and overseeing the work of design engineers. As the owner of the company’s transmission line standards, the Principal Engineer ensures they are maintained, updated, and compliant with industry best practices, standards, and regulations. This position involves acting as a technical leader across the project portfolio, mentoring team members, and driving innovation in transmission technologies to support reliable and efficient power delivery.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Acts as the subject matter expert for all aspects of transmission line design, construction, and maintenance, ensuring compliance with industry standards, industry standards, and regulations.
- Oversees the design, implementation, and operation of transmission line projects, ensuring that designs meet safety, efficiency, and regulatory standards.
- Develops and maintains the company’s transmission line design standards, ensuring they reflect industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinates with external contractors and consultants on transmission line projects to ensure that designs and construction activities align with project goals.
- Mentors design engineers and technologists, providing technical guidance and supporting their professional growth.
- Researches and integrates emerging transmission technologies, such as advanced conductors, structure designs, and materials, into company standards.
- Leads efforts to optimize workflows for transmission line design, identifying opportunities for cost savings, improved efficiency, and risk reduction.
- Collaborates with other engineering disciplines to ensure that transmission line projects integrate effectively into the broader power system.
- Participates in design reviews to ensure the transmission line designs are aligned with system-wide goals and operational needs.
- Represents the transmission line discipline in cross-departmental discussions, contributing technical expertise to system-wide strategies.
- Represents the transmission line engineering discipline in discussions with compliance department.
- Participates in professional organizations such as EPRI and NATF to stay informed on industry innovations and to contribute to company advancements.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support the company’s mission and goals.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in an applicable Engineering field minimum
- Graduate Degree in Civil or Power Systems Engineering preferred
- PE license in Indiana and Illinois preferred
Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant transmission line engineering experience required for applicants with a graduate degree in Civil Engineering or Power Systems Engineering. Minimum of 15 years of experience required for applicants with a bachelor’s degree in related field.
- Other levels of experience may be considered.

- Experience with emerging transmission technologies, including advanced conductors and structural design concepts
- Ability to manage and oversee external contractors and consultants to ensure design quality and compliance
